Only about a mile and a half from the elementary school in Sandy Hook is the now-closed Connecticut State Psychiatric hospital.
Years ago, if someone was having mental problems, they’d get sent off “to Newtown”. I had an aunt that spent a little time there (she came out of it).
Just empty buildings now, fenced off...
We can thank Rosalynn Carter for the boarded up Mental Hospitals. She took up the cause of the mentally ill, deemed mental institutions to be inhumane and worked for a massive shift from institutional based care to community based care. We don’t have more mentally ill people today. It’s just that they are now free to run around loose in our neighborhoods.
