NEWTOWN, Conn. (CBS Connecticut/AP) — CBS News is reporting that 27 people are dead, including 18 students, after a mass shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. The gunman is among the dead.
CBS News’ John Miller reports there is preliminary information that the gunman was the father of one of the students. Miller additionally reports the gunman is 20 years old and is from New Jersey.
The shooter was killed and apparently had two guns, a person with knowledge of the shooting said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still under way. It is not known whether the shooter took his own life or was killed.
CBS News reports that a second person is in custody and that SWAT is now investigating the home of the suspect.
A witness tells WFSB-TV that a second man was taken out of the woods in handcuffs wearing a black jacket and camouflage pants and telling parents on the scene, “I did not do it.”
Fox Connecticut reports that the shooting began in the kindergarten classroom.
“It’s just a bad situation,” Newtown Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Stoyak told CBS 2.
Two students and a teacher were also injured in the shooting and they were taken to Dansbury Hospital, spokeswoman Diane Burke told CBS News York.

My understanding is that this school ‘buzzes’ people in one at a time. And he was indeed buzzed in.
Then proceeded to shoot up the office.
So, I’m not sure buzzing in is the best deterrent to crazies killing babies
Unfortunately, crazies have a way of finding crowds. And crazies have a way of finding victims - ie. the number of pastors/priests that abused children.
If schools were the only place that abuse/killings happened, in a way, that would be conveinient wouldn’t it?
From what I read Andrea was suppose to be on haldol. Her husband took her off it so she could have another baby. A woman should never get pregnant on haldol but should NEVER go off it unless a doctor says it’s okay.
As far as I am concerned her husband killed those kids and darn near killed her.
Notice he divorced his mentally ill wife afterwards.
BTW after she was in the nervous hospital they put her back on the haldol and she realized what she had done and was remorseful.
interesting little factoid that certain [people are glossing over. The Shooter was HOMESCHOOLED by his mother at least part time by his mother that HE KILLED AT HOME.
So? It's meaningless.
I know a kid who had to be homeschooled because he was so bad the public schools KICKED HIM OUT. There was no choice about homeschooling by the parents if they wanted the kid to get an education, which they did.
So your little contention means nothing.
By the time he was homeschooled, the damage was done and years of public schooling was under his belt. Hard to pin it on homeschooling when there are so many other factors to consider.
But I don't suppose that will keep you from trying.
