As a former teacher of truly special ed children, developmentally disabled became a kind of hodgepodge of ailments, most usually applied to boys who couldn't sit still or concentrate or play nicely and really really needed medication because their families/teachers couldn't handle them and their rowdy behaviors.
Sorry about the rant, but I have a real sore spot about that term and how it was used to zone out our boys and lead them from an early age into our drug culture.

Not only that, but some parents actually work very hard to get their kids labeled as such because they can get government money. I have a friend who worked in social services for years and she told me that. Some of these kids are perfectly fine(or were).....but lousy parent gets a check if they are mentally disabled.
Our country is going down the crapper.
