The U.S. State Department is planning to designate the al-Nusra Front, a radical Islamist group in Syria, as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, according to two U.S. officials who spoke to CNN on background.
The goal of the designation is to isolate extremists groups in Syria while giving a boost to the new political opposition group unveiled at a summit in Doha, Qatar, last month.
The latest U.S. data estimates al-Nusra makes up roughly 9% of the rebel forces battling the regime.
Al-Nusra is basically the local version of Al Qaeda and is largely made up of foreign Sunni fighters battling to overthrow the Neo-Shiite Syrian government and replace it with an Islamic state.
The “new opposition” is led by a Muslim Brotherhood member and backed by Qatar, which funneled weapons to Jihadists leading to the creation of the new opposition. So you can see where this is going.
U.S. officials say the designation of al-Nusra is an effort to highlight the good opposition and express concern about the bad guys.
“We want to put the opposition on notice that these guys are becoming more of an issue and they need to do something about them,” one official said.
Right. Good luck with that. The Free Syrian Army relies heavily on Al-Nusra and a lot of FSA victories have really been Al-Nusra victories.
And Al-Nusra has the money and the firepower.

“Most FSA fighters are young. Some are even teenagers and carry unsophisticated weapons,” said civil servant Abdullah, 32, who lives in the army-held Old City.
“But Al-Nusra fighters are older and have modern weapons and bullet-proof vests.”
So that’s the question. Syria is coming down to a race between the Iranian allied Syrian government, the Muslim Brotherhood and Al Qaeda.
Which of these do we want? How about none. There is no possible outcome that we have any reason to want in Syria, except an indefinite war between all sides.

Syria warns 'terror groups' may use chemical arms
Syria warned the United Nations on Saturday that rebels may use chemical weapons after they gained control of a factory producing toxic chlorine east of Aleppo city.
"Terrorist groups may resort to using chemical weapons against the Syrian people... after having gained control of a toxic chlorine factory," the foreign ministry said, adding that Syria would never use chemical weapons.
The statement may be referring to the Syrian-Saudi Chemicals Company (SYSACCO) factory near the town of Safira, which was taken over earlier this week by rebel fighters from the jihadist Al-Nusra Front.

On March 17, 2007, for example, three chlorine-filled trucks were detonated in the Anbar province killing two and sickening over 350.[64] Other chlorine bomb attacks resulted in higher death tolls, with more than 30 deaths on two separate occasions.[65] Most of the deaths were caused by the force of the explosions rather than the effects of chlorine, since the toxic gas is readily dispersed and diluted in the atmosphere by the blast. The Iraqi authorities have tightened security for elemental chlorine, which is essential for providing safe drinking water for the population.

According to Mashregh, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard media outlet, Russia had warned Turkey not to escalate the situation, but with Turkey’s request for Patriot missiles, it delivered its first shipment of Iskanders to Syria. Reporting today, Mashregh said the handover occurred when Russian naval logistic vessels docked at Tartus in Syria. The Iskandar is a surface-to-surface missile that no missile defense system can trace or destroy, Mashregh said. Russia had earlier threatened that should America put its missile defense system in Poland, it would retaliate by placing its Iskander missiles at Kaliningrad, its Baltic Sea port. Russia’s delivery of Iskanders to Bashar Assad’s embattled regime clearly shows that the security and stability of Syria remains Russia’s red line, Mashregh said. It is unknown how many of these missiles have been delivered but the numbers given are sufficient to destroy any Patriot missiles in Turkey, it said. The delivery of the missile not only threatens the security of Turkey but also Israel, which would have to recalculate its strategy with its defensive and offensive capabilities. In some cases this ballistic missile can be used as an alternative to precision bombing. Missiles can be launched 16 minutes from traveling or 4 minutes from highest readiness. The second minute can be launched after less than a minute. Given the deteriorating situation in Syria, if the Iskander (SS-26 Missiles) were to fall into al Qaeda, al-Husra or Jundallah Islamist militia hands in the fundamentalist opposition that would constitute a serious threat to Israel’s yet to be completed missile defense umbrella.
