Perhaps, then again it might be the Soviets, like the dems, never let a crisis go to waste. I think we’ve missed the fact the Soviets are back and playing the Cold War game. Seems a great opportunity to make the US look bad, tie them up and destabilize the region further while sticking a finger in Israel’s eye. From the Soviet POV whats not to like.
Time for Israel to do some Damascus flyovers with their jets the way they have done in the past, except this time with nukes!!!
That is a terrible misstatement. That region is fleetingly stable as unstable is its norm.
There is a damn good reason historians refer to the Middle East as the graveyard of empires. It is naturally unstable because there are no modern-type nations there (Israel being the exception). Egypt was headed in that direction until the Muslim Brotherhood exerted itself to reimpose Muslim hegemony.
To understand the Middle East it is imperative to recognize that existing governments are like Mafia kingdoms, dominated by a single family or clan. There is always plotting, political maneuvering and internecine cold warfare ongoing inside every ‘nation’. Being an ally brings with it the automatic suspicion that the ally is actually an enemy biding time to takeover the nation.
The only way the area will ever be stable is for Islam to disappear and genuine nation states to develop. But that, I fear, is a long way away in the future, if it ever comes about.
