I failed algebra in 9th grade and then failed it again in the 10th grade. I finished high school by completing some crapola called "high school math".

In college I survived college algebra, trig, analytic geometry and calculus.

My qualified opinion:

If things aren't right at home there ain't nothing gonna work - some kid's in trouble.

Get things straightened out at home and a talented person who GAF can make a world of difference for a young person.

I can recall a particular conversation I had with a gentleman who taught math at a certain university near my home that I credit with making the difference for me. It took him about 30 minutes to convince me that I could learn math.

I don't even recall the guy's name any more but he made a difference in my situation simply because he GAF.

God bless this man.

Your experience was similar to mine...did poorly in math in high school, but when I got out of the Navy and went back to school I had a completely different motivation. Math never came easy, but I managed to repeat algebra through calculus with A’s and B’s.

And I don’t buy the bs “I’ll never use it” excuse...math teaches organized thinking and solving complex problems is important in anything one does.

I flunked 9th Grade Algebra and made an A in the repeat in the 10th. Flunked Algebra II in the 11th and made an A in the 12th. Got into college and took engineering calculus, trig and algebra and made decent grades by busting my butt studying and spending hours on the problems. It didn't come easy but I did it. Physics made more sense and was the application of calculus. Pharmaconetics in grad school made sense too and made calculus applicable. Math was hard for me but I had the motivation to enter the medical field and math was the door.
