It wasn’t that long ago that people were defending white only businesses with the same argument. It’s time to move on.
I am sorry but your comment and your tag line don’t match.
Yeah, and it wasn't that long ago that people were warning not to crush the racists with the force of law or there would be hell to pay somewhere down the line...welcome to somewhere down the line.
Move on my @$$! Religious freedom is one of the cornerstones of a free society. I for one will not accept the HHS mandate or any other law requiring me to pay for someone else’s abortions or contraceptives. I fail to see what relevance questions of racial discrimination have to the issue at hand.
Nice bit of equivocating there, Donnie.
A private business is just that, a PRIVATE business. If I owned my own business I should be able to run it how I see fit. If that means NOT supplying contraceptives in the insurance coverage so be it. If that means I want to serve whites only, so be it. People have the right NOT to work for me or frequent my business.
(It wasnt that long ago that people were defending white only businesses with the same argument. Its time to move on.)
NONSENSE.
And it is NEVER time to move on from freedom and liberty!
...as in MoveOn.org ?
What are you doing here on FRee Republic?
I don’t think that anyone ever tried to defend a whites only hiring policy on the basis of religious conscience. Actually the most egregious example of a whites only hiring policy was the Electrical Workers and Machinist Union and I don’t think that they claimed any religious exemption.
Remember, the racists were mostly Democrats.
What if Hobby Lobby and other CHRISTIANS do not want to just “move on”. What if they answer to someone higher than Obama?
It is, rather, a move to conscript private business owners into a political agenda, forcing them to facilitate and fund services that violate their religious beliefs and ethical judgments, within their own businesses. It would be analogous to the government requiring the American Cancer Society to give their staffers a monthly carton of Marlboros as a employee benefit, or a drug counseling agency to give out coupons for suicide kits.
There's not a thing wrong with white-only businesses. Or black-only businesses. Or hetero-only businesses.
Either we have a right to free association or we don't.
“people were defending white only businesses with the same argument.”
They might have been, but I’ve never heard it. The popular argument was for the right to run white, black, or whatever-only businesses based on freedom of association, which is similar to the constitutional right to peaceably assemble, among others. That’s at least debatable, as it involves 9th amendment reasoning. Religious freedom less so, because it’s there in black and white.
Also, the reason you bring up segregation to buttress a “move on” aegument is because most people have moved on from racism, at least in such a blatant form. I haven’t moved on from freedom of association and property rights, but don’t comment on the Civil Rights Act unless it comes up. Most people aren’t like me in that sense, though they are in the sense that they still believe in the freedom of religion. It may eventually go the way of racism. Not yet.
Your logic is worse than that stink.
Maybe it is time for you to move on to DU? Conflating religious freedom and conscience with racism and or bigotry is a leftist tactic.
I think that you're on the wrong forum. DU might be more to your liking.
