Next week may be Black Friday but sweets lovers across the nation hung their heads in sorrow on a dark Friday yesterday as Hostess announced they would cease making their line of products, which include the iconic Twinkies brand, because of the Bakers Union Strike.
But now as the brand heads towards liquidating and selling off their assets, a Mexican company may be angling to resurrect the golden Twinkies.
According to the Christian Science Monitor, while food producers ConAgra and Flowers Food, the American company behind Nature Valley granola, have expressed interest along with Little Debbie baker McKee Foods, Mexicos Grupo Bimbo may hold the inside track.
Grupo Bimbo is the worlds largest bread baking firm, which already owns parts of Sara Lee, Entenmanns and Thomas English Muffins and previously made what was considered a low-ball offer of $580 million a few years ago, Forbes reports. Now Hostess may only be worth $135 million.
Economists say high sugar prices tied to US trade tariffs were a big reason Hostess was struggling, but a Mexican company could be a lifeline for Twinkies because it would be able to take advantage of access to lower-priced sugar in Mexico.
While Hostess was clearly struggling, analysts believed Grupo Bimbo had an eye on them since the early 2000′s because they saw Hostess as a key ingredient for North American expansion with delivery routes that penetrated across the country into convenience stores, gas stations and grocery markets, according to Forbes.
Daniel Servitje Montull runs Grupo Bimbo, which was founded by his family in 1954. His family is worth $4 billion.
Servitje Montull, has already worked magic before, taking on Mexicos tortilla market and positioning white bread in Latin America.
If Grupo Bimbo pulls off a deal with Hostess for Twinkies, his next challenge will be resurrecting an American favorite.
The entire federal government was financed with mostly tariffs until the passage of the 16th amendment.
We can see how far the income tax has brought us ~ all the way to the point of national banruptcy.
We did much better on tariffs.
Bimbo? I know the perfect spokesperson!
NAFTA has worked out so well, hasn’t it? We can thank all of the Republicans and especially Dems back in the 90’s who stuffed it down our throats.
All of the Hostess brands will be sold to others and still made- us fat Americans can still have our Twinkies and glazed fruit pies ( they are my guilty food pleasure).
So they could efficiently human traffic low-wage illegal aliens into the country to help stock the Twinkie shelves. How convenient.
From the Wikipedia:
Etymology
The name "Bimbo" has no specific meaning in Spanish; thus, the name has not caused significant uproar as it would in the United States, where the word "bimbo" has a negative connotation. The official theory believes that the name Bimbo, coined in 1945 when the company was rebranded from its previous name, Super Pan S.A., is the mixing of the words "bingo" and "Bambi". In addition, the innocent, childlike name went well with the brand image they wanted to build. In Mexico as in some Latin American countries, it is common to refer to any bread brand as "pan bimbo" (bimbo bread) instead of the proper "pan de barra" (loaf of bread). The name "Bimbo" has almost become a synonym for bread.
0bama has quite a Grupa de Bimbos working for him. That’s why we’ve become a gutless, emasculated nation. 2013 will be a horrible year.
well thats just it - the corn sweeter is so ubiquitous that
those of us who need to avoid it cannot do so easily without giving up a lot of foods we used to eat as a matter of course.
I discovered I was diabetic quite by accident and have been
eating few or no sugars (other than raw fruit) or starches
(other than brown rice) since ‘06.
Fortunately I am type II and can control glucose levels by
‘diet and excersize’. So I spend a lot of time in the gym and have forgone my midday Payday bar ;-)
What's the difference? Mexicans already conquered America, with Obama as their willing and happy leader.
Are there still people out there that actually believe that America still exists? No borders, multi cultured, a government that supports several languages, Christianity decimated, American traditions dumped into what people believe are ancient history bins, and a lawless nation with lawless leaders ignoring the document that once held America together like glue, the Constitution, no longer anythinng but a museum piece. America is gone, dead and gone. The last generation of Americans, the WWII generation would NEVER have allowed all of the above to happen. But as they die off America dies with them. It will have to be rebuilt from scratch someday, if possible.
But as for right now, a lawless, rudderless, selfish gaggle of people from multiple cultures, some of them barbaric neanderthals, moslems, atheiests, earth worshippers, sexual deviates, devil worshippers, and various other fools who are being catered to by a lawless, visionless government, is all we are anymore. I am grateful to have at least seen America, as a boy, when America was still America. What you see today is God's lifting of His blessings as a chastisement for the cruel, wanton slaughter of 52 million human beings, all created in His image and likeness. America, rest in peace; but may it rise again one day with and through the return of CHRISTIANITY, with faith in action, reverencing "the Creator", the ONE responsible for all of our human, natural rights laid out the Declaration of Independence.
I don't know.
C’mon, be reasonable... I’ve eaten Mexican food and lived to tell the tale. Their stuff isn’t up to US/Canadian in quality; the cookies, the pastas are crude. But no melamine.
As many are pointing out, Bimbo Twinkies would be baked in Texas. Bimbo bread is also baked in the States and, I can personally testify, is darned good, not Mexico crude.
Lets face it-Twinkie junkies won`t care if they come from Pluto as long as they taste the same. I like the Ding Dongs myself. Hope lower production costs will be reflected in the price. Whatever happened to competion? I can make Twinkies at home...its not particle physics.
The Twinkie challenge is to mass produce a consistent cake that has a guaranteed shelf life. Anyone can creme-fill sponge cake bars.
Maybe if they get enough of our businesses down there, the illegals will all go home!
I predicted Bimbo a few days ago.
I am a realtor in the DFW area....my company has helped several Bimbo executives move to the Dallas area. I just had a Bimbo exec move here from Chicago this year.... The plant that I know of is just south of Ft.Worth.
I have been told the pronunciation is “Beem-bo”.
Dos Tweenquis!
The Mexicans just let us crazy gringos giggle at the Bimbo name. They don’t care.
I don’t always eat mass-produced snack cakes, but when I do I prefer Dos Tweenquis.
Stay hungry, my friends.
