There has been bloodshed and violence in Congo since I can remember. I’d say that the only thing that’ll save Congo is a healthy dose of recolonization. The Belgians were pretty brutal, but there wasn’t any of this wholesale slaughter.

I suspect that the Belgians had a correct estimate of the level of force needed to keep things under control there.

I’ve read a few accounts of the struggle for independence. I’ll bet there were a lot of Congolais that were perfectly happy with the ancien regime.
