Careful with claiming direct descent from a source so old as the Battle Abbey Rolls without a clear lineage. The presence of the surname makes it a good possibility but does not prove it. My own surname is there, too. But, there’s a huge gap prior to the 13th century, for me and for most, that proves nearly impossible to bridge unless you’re descended from royalty.
I’ve got another who is listed on the Templar Inquisition of 1085, earliest known coat of arms for the surname, very simple as the oldest ones always are. Black lion passant on a gules (red) field. It’s not a family coat of arms it belonged to him. Any descendants entitled to armorial bearing would have differenced or changed the earlier arms to make them their own, so they got more complicated as time wore on.
Interesting historical artifacts is all they are for Americans as well as most alive today, coats of arms are. Some can be quite beautiful.
I would like to obtain an image of any Coat of Arms related to this lineage. Any suggested sites?
