This is an excellent opportunity for faith based organizations, read “churches”, to set up co-op food and labor swaps for people in need. There is a good process for doing so, and it results in a lot of good for a lot of people.

It starts as an in-house process, to find out which current congregants are in need of food aid, which need some labor (usually the elderly or disabled), and who has surplus resources of anything, usually one type of food. Money is not part of the equation at this point.

With a healthy dollop of management, pretty soon food, cooked and uncooked, is shuffled around; the folks who need help around the house get their lives improved a lot; and those doing okay spend some time looking for surplus bargains, like bulk food sales, and maybe doing some cooking.

Often this results in far more abundance than is needed, so the next phase is to slowly start bringing outsiders in, based on both an invitation by congregants and the agreement to help them as well.
