Resignations over scandals often raise more questions than they answer, and thats true of Gen. David Petraeuss abrupt exit from the Central Intelligence Agency.
Some have already been put to rest: Paula Broadwell, the co-author of All In: The Education of David Petraeus, has been identified as the woman at the center of the FBI email probe that ultimately toppled him.
But many questions remain.
Here are POLITICOs six most important:
1. Why resign now?
The Obama administrations first sex scandal exploded just three days after the president was reelected at the end of a hard-fought campaign and just days before Petraeus was scheduled to appear at a congressional hearing about the attacks in Benghazi, Libya.
The White House says no one there knew about the Petraeus situation before Wednesday and the president himself was informed Thursday. But if the story had broken a week earlier, those headlines would have overtaken much of the presidents message about the middle class and his work in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Who made the decision to wait, and why, is going to be the subject of scrutiny as this scandal continues to unfold.
(Also on POLITICO: No pass for Petraeus)
Petraeuss departure now has also thrown a whole new pile of grist into the Benghazi controversy. Already, the attack that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three others was being called an intelligence failure both the failure to anticipate it and the decision to identify it as a riot rather than a terrorist attack.
Acting CIA Director Michael Morell, Petraeuss deputy, will go to the Hill instead for Thursdays hearing. But already, theres a clear sense that going public with his affair and resigning from his job isnt enough to get Petraeus off the hook.
David Petraeus testifying has nothing to do with whether or not hes still the CIA director, and I dont see how the CIA can say hes not going to testify, House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Peter King (R-N.Y.) told CNN. He was at the center of this, and he has answers that only he has.
2. What else was part of the FBI probe?
They need to drag this SOB to the hearings NOW.
sorry, Petreus, you screwed up...fix your legacy and your marriage later...If you can’t do the time, don’t comiit the crime!
I want to know why Administration officials came out and said Petraeus wouldn’t testify. That is total nonsense. There is something completely rotten about Benghazi. We NEED Petraeus to clear the air.
4. Why werent Obama and congressional committees told earlier?
**********************
Oh I see, they assume Obama wasn’t told, didn’t know. Nice.
I think it is pretty obvious this is why Holder started looking for the exit right after the election.
It is all a bunch of underhanded chit and we will never get the truth. Not on this, not on Benghazi and not on Fast and Furious.
We no longer have representative government, clean elections or a proper media as it was meant to be.
We just have a bunch of people fleecing us for every dang dime they can. That is all we are for all of them— a source of money.
Our military is expendable, they should die before a civilian of another country is ever at risk, the ROE is flocked!.
We are a product for a bunch of elites to use up. We are disposable.
Just look at the disgusting old fool George Soros, he sits and drools over his sexy young wife, barking out orders and moving around money.
All to bring him more power and more money. And there are more of his type. They play a grand game of chess using the disposable people.
Mr. Language Person sez:
This should be "Petraeuss departure now has also thrown a whole new pile of grist into the mill of the Benghazi controversy."
A small point, but you know Mr. Language Person.
2. Is that broad well known to be provocative?
3. Is that broad well known to be ambitious?
4. Is that broad well known to be intelligent and intellectually curious?
5. Is that broad well known to be physically fit?
Just askin'.
Anyone wanting on or off this ping list, please advise.
Top military brass heads toppled IMMEDIATELY. It seemed like there were several who were throttled and gagged right away - not just Petraeus. - BENGHAZI stinks. Every time you walk around the pile of debris and take a whiff, it stinks. WHY? - Usually with Hillary, things have gone down the old “memory hole” never to be seen or heard from again. -
Not picking on you Mesta, but link does not work as once did prior. Please do not remove me from ping list for picking on you. btw ... this post was not important and neither were any of the others the past hour plus. May I get in the mood? Thinking will sing or post a link to a song. Posting a link to a song would be easier.

Thank you.
The Code of Military Conduct allows for them to open his retirement, demote him, and decrease his retirement for his infidelity. I think that if any member of the armed forces was demoted, or stripped of retirement or salary benefits because of similar infiedility, then Petraeus needs to as well.
As to whether Obama knew, I think someone in the White House knew, but I have a feeling Obama is a very detached leader. Misses over half the daily intelligence briefings, doesn’t meet even with his own party members of Congress. I think he leaves most of the decision making in the WH to others. Sad, but I’m afraid, true.
good points. good view on Obozo.pretty accurate.
Ha. Thank you. There was an extra >. Darn things.
