Assuming that Des Moines is where most blue votes come from
in Iowa... is the rest of the state (rural) just so
sparely populated that red voters can’t make up the
difference?

Eastern Iowa has a lot of Democrats. A friend and I were discussing this. Grassley and Branstad can win statewide races but the governor is elected in the off years from the president. Makes one wonder why off year elections are easier for Republicans to win.
Romney lost Polk Co. by 30,000 votes while Latham only lost by 3,000 votes. I don’t know if this looks suspicious or not.
