Israeli military leaders have conducted a war game simulating a strike on Iranian nuclear facilities, three days after the US Presidential elections. They concluded such an operation could be pulled off without plunging the whole region into war. Iranian experts disagree. David Patrikarakos reports.
On the 24 September at Israels National Institute of Security Studies, an obdurately dull building off a main road in Tel Aviv, three dozen men and women drawn from the top echelons of Israels political and military elite met to play a war-game, the outcome of which could help decide whether Israel goes to war with Iran.
I was in Israel with film director, Kevin Sim, who was making a documentary on the war game for Dispatches on Channel 4.
The notional starting point of the game was 9 November 2012, just after the American presidential elections. Participants were divided into ten groups each representing likely key players in the conflict Israel, Iran, the US, Russia, Hezbollah, Egypt, Syria, Turkey, Russia and the UN. All the teams were made up of Israelis.
The war game is what it says it is a game. Despite its seriousness, inside the Institute there was an air of make-believe.

Step 1: Buy up all the movie and television studios in Iran.
Step 2: Start putting out propaganda movies and shows to induce “Persian Guilt” in the audiences, and run them 24/7.
Step 3: Run a half-Persian, half-Jewish candidate for the Iranian presidency, on the promise that he will be a uniter, not a divider, while he is secretly loyal to Israel.
If it can work here, why not there?
If the Israelis believe they are in mortal danger; from their point of view, they should strike Iran, even if it means touching off a widespread war and getting Americans killed in the Mideast from an Iranian retaliation. -tom
And, I expect they will!
If they are allowing a film documentary of this "war game" you can bet it was "make-believe."
Caliph Hussein will intervene on the side of the Mad Mullahs. Birds of a feather...
Who would have thought that Israel would wind up leading our national defense without our help or cooperation?
Here it is.
Thanks doug from upland. This has been on the table for a while now, and the African raid this year was in part a proof of concept.
I don't think there will be much, if any- Iranian retaliation available:

Israel Needs A Preemptive Nuclear Strike Against Iran
"The best way to get that message across is to make it very clear that if Israel is faced between an Iran nuclear bomb, or having to launch a preemptive nuclear strike to prevent that eventuality, it will opt for the latter."
"The world must be told loud and clear by Israel that the only way to avoid the first nuclear strike by a nation since Nagasaki is to take whatever actions are required to ensure Iran doesnt get the bomb, and to prevent an Iranian conventional weapons build up to the point where a preemptive nuclear strike becomes the only option for dealing with the rogue ayatollah regime."
