WASHINGTON (AP) House Speaker John Boehner offered Wednesday to pursue a deal with a victorious President Barack Obama that will include higher taxes under the right conditions to help reduce the nations staggering debt and put its finances in order.
Mr. President, this is your moment, Boehner told reporters. We want you to lead.
Boehner said House Republicans are asking Obama to make good on a balanced approach that would including spending cuts and address government social benefit programs.
Lets find the common ground that has eluded us, Boehner said while congratulating the president on winning a second term.
The Ohio Republican spoke a day after the presidents clear re-election victory. He said conditions on higher taxes would include a revamped tax code to make it cleaner and fairer, fewer loopholes and lower rates for all.

Love him or hate him THAT IS NOT WHAT HE SAID!
I'd be happy to watch the fiscal cliff drive over. The permanent cuts in part time worker's hours under ObamaCare which considers 30 hours or more to be "full time" could help some people realize what has happened to them and why Republicans and independents tried to fight back.
Unfortunately they'll blame the greedy rich.
when you see your enemy turn tail and start to run, do you:
A. offer a truce
B. go home
C. chase them down, kill them all, and push further into their territory unopposed
if you’re GOPe, your answer is always A or B.
if you’re anyone else, your answer is C
expect increased taxes, double down on govt spending, radically extravagant govt programs, massive irresponsibility when is comes to our military, radical cutting of defense, and the coup de grace on our defense... the removal of our last nuclear warheads.
**** him, **** his party, **** them all.
If you think this is such a good idea, why did Bonehead wait untill 1 day
After the election to share his grand bargain.
You know the reason, just like I do.
Which makes Bonehead another Hack.
They know we are headed for a financial disaster so they plan to blame the Republicans by saying they would not agree to a tax on the rich. If they can get away with blaming Bush for the last 4 years they will get away with blaming the Republicans for the financial crisis that is about to happen.
This is an example of why we lost - go along, get along Republicans with no spine.
Couldn't agree more. I think the people have spoken and the country wants cradle to grave government care. So now let us ALL pay for it.
Boehner is proposing exactly what Romney proposed...LOWER RATES FOR ALL.
Increased revenues come from closing loopholes which is what conservatives have wanted for years (simplified code).
The media will try to dupe conservatives on this, but Boehner is saying what needs to be said.
Ditto. I also say give them the tax increases they want. Make it clear that you are opposed but doing it in the interest of “compromise”. That way they won’t have Reps to blame for the failing economy. When the small business shut down, the workers who voted for this clown can fell the pain. We can say—we gave them what they wanted. Higher taxes, less jobs.

What you're suggesting is immediate automatic tax increases that will be permanent. The so-called "Bush Tax Cuts" are a temporary thing that has now lasted 10 years. Somewhere in all the noise about "tax cuts for the wealthy" a few simple facts were lost.
1) We have not had an across the board tax cut since 2003.
2) Those tax cuts are now the current tax rates. Have been for 10 years.
3) Left alone those tax rates expire in Jan. We get a defacto tax increase and 0boober doesn't even have to vote on it. A progressives wet dream.
4) One big reason for the length of this recession (aside from Bam Bam's destructive policies) is uncertainty in the tax code. Every few years we go through the kabuki dance of "letting the tax cuts expire" only to have them extended another few years. That's no way to run a first-world business economy, but it's the norm in the turd world where taxes go up at the whim of the dictator.
Finally.... Any spending cuts are going to be smoke and mirrors, cuts in the rate of growth ,except probably in the case of the military, those will be real and hard hitting.
The reporter is putting words in his mouth.
Boehner needs to just shut up and let the chips fall where they may.
There is a part of me that wants to see the Obama agenda on steroids and just let the Socialist have everything he wants. +70% income tax rates. VAT Tax. Expedite Obamacare implementation. Cap and Trade. Amnesty. Public Employee Unions. Crony Capitalism. Downsized Military. Trillions more in Debt. Worthless Dollar.
It’s all going to happen anyway, so the crash might as well happen on his watch.
More misquoting of Boehner even at this hour, eh? He's got to love getting incoming from every direction no matter what he actually says.
FR is becoming a laughingstock; maybe every new thread and reply needs a checkbox wherein the user acknowledges that he has read the article completely, understands it and accepts the possibility of misquotes, out-of-context snippets, partisan spin and agitprop with extreme prejudice.
Why should he shut up?
trader, you and me are the only one that noticed the headline did not match the content...
Correct.
So many posters are determined to hate Boehner to such an extent that they believe whatever the MSM tells them in order to do so.
