Sequestration is a terrible, horrible, no good idea.
And we must let it happen.
You know what you call $1.2 trillion in budget cuts? A good start.
After last night it's clear that as presently constituted there is no electoral path to reducing the size and scope of government. Since we can not do that in an orderly and rationale way, we must use the tool we have at hand.
The lame duck will feature a lot of talk about "grand bargains". No Just no. While the GOP and conservatives were crushed last night, the GOP still retains control of the House so "the people" voted for more gridlock. Then gridlock they shall have. And that means enforcing the current law of the land....sequestration.
I'd much rather a messy, disorganized and painful set of cuts than an clean, orderly and disastrous set of tax and spending increases.
As someone once said, "never let a crisis go to waste bitches". At least I think that's what they said.
Oh and the debt ceiling needs to be raised again.
As a commenter pointed out: Let ALL the Bush tax cuts expire. All the people who were taken off the roles 10 years ago? Back on baby!
I say let the Bush tax cuts expire too. ALL of them. All the people enjoying no or low taxes now will find out really quick that Bush’s cuts didn’t only benefit the rich.
It will hurt like hell, but be worth it in the long run to teach the leaches a lesson.
Do it
I’ve already lost my 30 year job with a defense contractor. So have many tens of thousands the past 4-5 years. Might as well complete the punishment on the industry. In the case of Lockheed Martin, they’ll spare the jobs in VA and PA and slash and burn them in CA and CO.
I have no problem with sequestration now. We spend hundreds of billions every year for the sole purpose of keeping Third World nations all over the globe from slaughtering each other, and yet we can’t even defend our own borders.
A return to the Founders’ model of American isolationism is a necessary, though not sufficient, condition for American renewal. There is a reason Washington told us to avoid entangling alliances, but we have ignored his wisdom, thinking ourselves so much greater than the father of our country.
Let those who wish to slaughter each other, do so. We are no longer able to stop them. Focus on only enough military to defend our own borders, and let everyone else defend themselves.
As I said a little over 4 years ago, ain’t nobody or nothin’ “too big to fail”. Do it - no bailout.
Completely agree. I hope the House leadership gets the message.
Boehner reportedly going to lay down markers at 3:30 pm. I have no doubt he’ll talk a good game, not sure if he’ll crumble later.
Ironically, it may be McConnell who gives Boehner a backbone, because McConnell needs sustained confrontation, not compromise.
Since all of the social spending would get sequestered too I suspect Obama would blink faster than you could say “the wealthy”.
LOL. Wow! I have to agree. Let’s burn down the house. It’s will speed a re-building.
You know what I have told my daughter to do if she is ever kidnapped or carjacked? Force the vehicle into a violent crash as soon as possible. It’s gonna hurt and its dangerous. But it beats the odds of the alternative in the longer run.
All the defense firms who were complicit in not complying with the WARN Act can go to Hell.
The election is over, so all the thousands of pink slips can be sent out with 0bama’s ugly face on them and the word “SUCKER!”.
lets go for it....I’ll just not work as much...save on my back, my taxes, and my emotions...
Exactly what I’ve been thinking.
Guessing he’ll fold and let the media spank him hard and often. It’s the GOP way.
Agreed. Before my layoff, I spent 10 of my last 13 months employment under a WARN and WARN extensions. And they decide not to issue the WARNs that they threatened the employees with all year long?
I agree.
Let sequestration happen and the Bush tax cuts expire.
If people want to live by Obamanomics, they can die by Obamanomics.
Disappointed before, of course, but Boehner and the House GOP leadership did not pick a lot of fights with Obama in order to protect the ultimate GOP nominee for president.
That is no longer an imperative; in fact, the critical need is for the House to draw a line in the sand.
Boehner, Cantor, McCarthy know what is at stake.
There was a wonderful article a couple of weeks ago — possibly by Steve Hayes — urging the GOP to just go with sequestration if Obama was re-elected.
Will they be retroactive?
Ace has a way with words. It’s gonna be fun. Of course the GOP will fold, they sort of have to. If they don’t (despite the obvious fact that it takes two to make a deal) the spin will be “GOP is killing Grandma — look, she died, because of Republican Greed and Corruption”.
So, a deal will be had. But Boehner has a good hand to bargain with.
From what I heard, starting in 2013.
