Romney Could End Up With Less Votes Than McCain Got In 2008
NewsBusters ^

What happened to all that Republican enthusiasm we heard talk about since the Tea Party took America by storm?

With 95 percent of Tuesday's ballots counted, it appears Mitt Romney could end up with less votes than John McCain got in 2008 when all the planets lined up against the GOP.

At press time, Romney has 56,972,497 votes.

In 2008, McCain got 59,934,814.

If only five percent of the votes are still left to be counted as reported by the Associated Press, this means there may be a little over six million ballots remaining.

Romney would have to get 48.3 percent of those just to match McCain's total.

Of course, even if that were to happen, this would have to be viewed as a terrible showing for Romney.

All we've been hearing for months was that there was far more enthusiasm this election for Republicans.

It would be the final, embarrassing insult.

I think what many of us overlooked is that the Economic Collapse was imprinted on Bush and the GOP party in a much deeper manner than thought.

I think a lot of the Stay At Home Bush voters went into an “I hate all of them” mood. It will take another 4 years of Obama to wake them up, and even then it will take an inspirational figure to do it. I have no idea who that is. I suspect the GOP is going to put their chips behind Rubio.

The GOP-e will conclude that they went too far right with Romney. Laugh, but I have already heard it on the network coverage last night/this morning.

This is the thing that dumbfounded me. The numbers simply do not match.

1) We knew that this race would be close.

2) nonetheless, I think we should start asking how many dead people, pets, illegal aliens and felons voted. I may be tilting at windmills along with everyone else here, but I have a hard time believing that massive fraud wasn’t involved.

3) in the absence of any verification of fraud, as much as I hate to say this, perhaps it is time to re-visit the electoral college issue. When the Founding Fathers created the Constitution, I don’t believe that they ever envisioned the America that we have today.

4) If nothing else can be done, perhaps the red states should consider secession. For us, it resolves a lot of looming issues.

I’m really starting to wonder about that. I suppose it’s very possible.

After all the reports of hours long lines, most important election in our lifetimes rhetoric, etc., this is simply amazing.

I forgot to add, even with me saying that, I still find it hard to believe Romney couldn’t even get past the McCain total....that seems almost impossible because Obama did not get any MORE votes. It isn’t like Obama picked up the McCain voter, he lost voters too.

Maybe more people just think it is rigged and a joke and doesn’t matter? A puppet show?

In a June UPI poll, 10% of Republicans stated they would not vote for a Mormon. Do the math.

McCain getting more votes than Romney.

I admit I get a bit of twisted humor by this fact. Taking into account, of course, the endless arguments I kept hearing over and over touting Romney’s “electability.”

it was predictable ~ in fact, I predicted it right here on FR as early as February, although there were inklings of the problem back in August 2011, and a related problem surfaced earlier on February 14, 2011 with the selection of Preibus, a known Romney supporter, to replace Michael Steele, a hard core Right To Lifer who'd just presided over the greatest Republican electoral victory in 70 years.

The Republican party fractured at that point ~ and not just into two parts but about half a dozen parts.

Many Preibus supporters were also NOT Romney supporters ~ which shows you the kind of fractures that party had to deal with. The firing of Steele ~ apparently for being there when Republicans won a big election created other fractures between RTL conservatives and the soon to be renamed GOP-e ~ they obviously weren't going to get together at all in the long run.

Without going into all the details, the Republicans set themselves up to be skewered first by the GOP-e and then by the Democrats, even as the Democrats began to spill disaffiliated Democrats by the millions.

Preibus provided little if any primary support to make sure all went well, and even less support to Senatorial candidates ~ particularly those who did not buy into his blind loyalty to Romnyism.

I’m thinking more and more that they managed to find a way to pull fraud on a gigantic scale. There are so many ways they could have done it.

10% eh? Did you as them if they'd vote for a Commie too?

On any given day you can probably find 10% of Republicans ready to not vote for almost anyone of any affiliation.

I'd like to see the structure of that poll too ~

We saw with our own eyes the chick fil a voting, the massive voter turnout by republicans...

Obviously our vote counts less than who counts the vote.

Do we need a bloody civil war? NO, because people have not yet learned what it means to be enslaved, so they don't have the will to fight for their freedom. Americans must first learn the price of freedom before they are willing to pay it. And the price of freedom is not Blood. The price of freedom is the moral integrity to live by the rule of righteousness. As long as a significant portion of the country is willing to live on welfare, live a totally immoral life, or a be a boob tube useless eater that has no spiritual understanding beyond how to open a bag of Frito's, there is no America to fight for.

There is no reason for the Progressives to remain here for money, they have stolen more money than we can repay in generations of hard work. Now its about power. And what good is power except to make people suffer under your thumb. If you use power to serve peoples needs, that is called responsibility, something quite out of vogue in DC.

Nope, as long as we have a Congress that is willing to let an impostor be a president, so they can run a country without a budget, there is nothing to fight for.

Only thing that will save America now is Suffering, and plenty of it. And that is a Change that Zero and his buddies will deliver in quantity. Next stop, famine in the land...

Need to begin working on the midterms now with candidates that don’t mangle sentences that include the word ‘rape’. We also need to fight the commies on their level.

Half of that is 3m votes. That's Obama's margin of victory right there. Maybe it was never in the cards. Romney is the ideal RINO candidate except for the fact that he's Mormon.

This is the most perplexing thing to me. All the votes haven’t been counted but a good estimate is that Obama will get 6-7 million LESS votes than in 2008. That’s a 9-10% decrease, which should end up in a resounding defeat for an incumbent.

What then, happened to the groundswell for the GOP? Conservatives seemed to have made their peace with Romney and there seemed to be a lot of enthusiasm among conservatives and Christian conservatives.

Apparently it was all an illusion. Turnout worse than McCain? Good grief. It also killed a lot of Senate races (of course some of them had self-inflicted wounds)

This lack of turnout is a complete puzzlement to me.
