Romney Campaign Enlists Help of 'Killer Whale' Project to Get Out the Vote (Worrried? Read this)
NET News, Nebraska's PBS & NPR Stations ^ | November 5, 2012 | Alex Burns

For months now, the Romney campaign has been putting together a high-tech voter monitoring operation to use on Election Day that will identify which of their committed supporters have voted -- and then corral those who haven't.

They call it the Orca Project, named for the powerful killer whale. Why Orca? It seems the Orca is the greatest natural predator of the Narwhal, the name of the Obama campaign's top secret voter micro-targeting system.

Orca will deploy 34,000 operatives in key precincts tomorrow, linked by a smartphone "killer app" to 800 volunteers on the floor of TD Garden (formerly Boston Garden). The Romney campaign has tried to keep Orca under wraps until the past few days. But today, Romney for President Communications Director Gail Gitcho proudly described it for us. Watch the interview with Gitcho above.

"At 5 o'clock when the exit polls come out, we won't pay attention to that," Gitcho said Monday. "We will have had much more scientific information just based on the political operation we have set up."

Similarly, Election Day for President Obama's campaign will be the culmination of an extensively detailed and precise get out the vote effort put together by the Democrats.

For several months, the Obama campaign has been operating sophisticated efforts, most notably code named Dreamcatcher and Narwhal, gathering information and sorting voters using a comprehensive set of analytics. Placing potential supporters in categories based on such seemingly benign information as the grocery stores they shop at or brand of beer they drink. From there the campaign has been able to identify voting trends based on specific issues and has targeted its messaging appropriately to maximize the efficiency of its efforts.

On election day, the Obama campaign will shift to its final phase, with Gordon -- a vote tracking system similar to the Project Houdini effort it launched on election day four years ago. Gordon seems to be less ambitious than Houdini was. Four years ago, the Obama campaign assigned each of its likely voters a four digit code that would be messaged to a database by a poll site volunteer after the voter had signed in. The effort overheated and this year the Obama campaign has decided to use a less robust tracking system and divert volunteers to other, more traditional get out the vote efforts.

If Zippy wins, we’ll be under a Chavez type rule. If you don’t vote, they will come and take you and make you vote...for them.

It’s going to be hell.

With all the wonderful technology they should do a better job running the country.

Also a very important part of this program:

The app will already have the early and absentee voters recorded on it to allow the Romney legal team to contest votes from those early and often voters. The information will be relayed directly to Gov. Romney at the war room in Boston, which he will use to make tactical decisions based on the data that is sent back.

Obama’s vote targeting system is named after the Narwhal, aka the unicorn of the ocean.

This election is krilling me. When this is over I'm going to need a long cetacean.

You and I would do a better job if we only had quill pens, papyrus and carrier pigeons.

Before you do, please send a sand dollar to Jerry's squids, just for the Halibut.

Aye, that I will do, and what's more, before the orca sends President Chicken of the Sea to some Hawaian school, where he can bone up on seventh grade math and study the alphanet, and spin with the seals no more.

Care for some grog and a sea biscuit?

It gets worse...nervous humor.

But it beats being on the other side, which I suspect will be quite crabby come tomorrow evening after all the leftfinned anchors are forced to report that their Dear Leader's campaign conched out.

We hope.

I don’t see this as all that invasive. They read your name aloud and someone else punches it into a computer and they cross you off their list. Personally I wish we would just do away with the secret balllot and save the silliness. You could vote at anytime and it would end most fraud...but result in more outright vote buying.

If you are going to name something after a sea creature, it may as well be named after the apex preditor of the sea. Ironically, both the Orca and Narwhal have death related names. "Narwhal" means "corpse whale" in Icelandic. Orcas are named after the Roman diety of death, Orcanus. It's better to be death incarnate than a bloated corpse.
Orcas are uber-dolphins roaming the seas. Narwhals are retards that get caught in ice.

On that note....I got a letter in the mail a few days ago presumably showing myself and eight other neighbors on our block and whether or not we voted in 2004, 2008 and 2012. It showed that I voted in '08 and '12 (early voting) but said I didn't vote in 2004. The problem is that I DID vote in 2004 but not here in North Carolina (we didn't move here until '06). There was no explanation anywhere on the form for that possibility so what steams me is my neighbors will think I failed to vote in 2004. It does start to feel a little creepy.

Holy cats, that's impressive.

Hmmm, don't Orcas eat Narwhals? Just sayin'.

"From there the campaign has been able to identify voting trends based on specific issues and has targeted its messaging appropriately to maximize the efficiency of its efforts."

Really? Because unless they're illegally sharing this information with their 527s, the 2 Bobo ads I've seen are remarkably bland and unfocused.
