(Reuters) - New Jersey Governor Chris Christie defended his praise for President Barack Obama after superstorm Sandy, but said he would stick with his fellow Republicans and vote for Mitt Romney in Tuesday's election.
"I endorsed Mitt Romney 13 months ago because I thought he was the best guy for the job," Christie said on Sunday during a news conference, reaffirming his support for the Republican candidate.
But support for Romney does not mean that he cannot appreciate the "good job" that Obama did while responding to the historical storm that hit the U.S. Northeast last week, Christie said. Sandy knocked out power to some 2.4 million New Jersey residents.
Christie, a popular governor widely seen as a possible Republican presidential contender in 2016, had frustrated some in the Romney campaign who feared he had given what could be a critical boost to Obama, a Democrat.

oooo....nuance! Some people are so smart they can be on both sides of an issue, for something before they’re against it, and praise someone you’re going to vote against.
Too late, fatso. When the future of the free world is at stake, if you don’t have something negative to say, don’t say anything at all. There is a big picture here...
Walk it back all you want Gov Kristie Kreme. As far as republicans and conservatives go, you just earned yourself the title of one term governor.
Too late Crispy. You have become persona non grata in the Republican Party.
If Mitt loses, you are 100% responsible.
It would have been one thing if Obama had actually done a good job, but Christie knows that’s not the case.
Chris Christie is an ass. He may have added anywhere from 2-3 points to Obama with his stupid asinine comments praising Obama for doing that he’s supposed to do and they were only words not actions.
I sure wish we could fix all of the world’s problems with just one half hour helicopter ride. I mean, the “messiah” flew over the disaster area and everything was solved. Fluking amazing!
No forgiveness ever for the walking coronary. And his speech at the convention was a self serving embarrassment too.
even if a reasonable person could say he only was trying to get help for his state, and even if you could say he was elected to help his state not the us, then, he just got unlucky, because he definately looks like a hothead who coud turn on his party and cant be trusted.
as mike singletary said, “can’t win with him, i want winners”.
The tough talking governor could not handle a crisis. He had an emotional breakdown. It is understandable but it shows he is not suitable for a larger office. Any national aspirations he had will not happen unless he becomes a Democrat. The Modern Democratic Party does not seem to mind having weak leaders.
I’m not defending CC. He committed a political no-no. However, I—and many of us—liked him precisely because of his blunt, tell-you-what-he-think style. So, perhaps he was impressed at the speed of 0bama’s team responding to the hurricane last week, even if 0bama’s motivation was simply to make good photo-ops. So, I wouldn’t be calling him traitor or anything like that. Reckless politician, may be.
Agreed...
I was a huge CC fan. I was moved by his speech at the Reagan library... I especially remember when a mother of a teenage girl pleaded with him to run for the love of country...
I admit I am more of a social liberatarian and fiscally and militarily hawkish and so I fancied CC as being in the mold of a Guiliani.
regardless of our differences... it is an absolute no brainer that King Hussein must be defeated. CC could have been polite and cordial to barry but to go overboard and humiliate himself like he did...
I will never ever forget this betrayal.
I will never vote for CC. He is finished in the GOP as far as I am concerned.
I hope you (Christie) or one of your staff are reading these comments, because you need to know your fate with conservatives is sealed. You sir, are scum. Just as Bart Stupack became a traitor to the pro-life movement with his support of Obamacare, you are a traitor to all conservatives. I cannot WAIT to work against your re-election. This will be fun.
It has left a very bad feeling. His “apology” speech today was so backhanded it should’ve been left unsaid. anyone gleaning anything positive from it for Romney was under the influence of a mood-altering substance.
He is not up to the task.
I wonder when his champion Anne Coulter is going to come out and opine on this disgrace. He has proven himself sophomoric.
"Chris Christie is an ass. He may have added anywhere from 2-3 points to Obama with his stupid asinine comments praising Obama for doing that hes supposed to do and they were only words not actions."
Yeah, but Obama threw it all away with his bizarre "revenge" comment, and his divisive, hyper-partisan speeches this weekend.
My thinking is, just what is Christie supposed to do? He needs certain Federal resources and waivers. His state was just hit by a hurricane that communities there have no experience in dealing with, (unlike a state like Florida). The damage was dramatic. The emotional pain of the folks and towns that lost everything was even more dramatic.
Christie needed to strike for Federal Largess while the iron was hot. In a few days the cameras will be gone and so will the attention given the area. Communities like Seaside and a whole host of others will be relegated to the local news.
It will be a very long, years, if not decades long process to bring back what was lost. In a sense, the folks that lost their homes due to fire in Breezy Point New York, have it made. They will be covered, but those that lost their homes due to flooding will not. This will wipe out a great many families and communities.
So Christie gave the President a photo op. He made Obama look presidential. Well, Obama SHOULD go to the stricken areas. Christie needed to stress the assets he needed for his state right now. He had a chance to bend the Federal Ear. Hopefully he used that time well.
But now Obama owns the hurricane after the inevitable gov’t response. Afterall, there is only so much a President can do. And, perhaps Christie gave Obama the rope to hang himself. After praising the President, everyone that is cold and hungry and without shelter can look to Obama for the cause of their misery. After all Obama took ownership.
As a reporter many years ago and in a different life, I met Bush the Elder in Santa Cruz and Mrs Quayle in Watsonville after the Quake of 1989. It is important for the folks in Washington D.C. get out and see for themselves, what nature hath wrought. It was these people that voted them in office (perhaps), it was these communities that gave the mantle of power to the office holder.
Donald Trump needs to go talk to that boy.
Stop saying Obama’s a nice man because he’s not.
Is this the SNL skit??????
