Same mess here in Ill-Annoy!
That first video said the winds were spreading it to other buildings, I feel sorry for the fire fighters, my hubby was a volunteer for many years & it’s horrible in bad weather conditions.
no
Rockaway is the home of many NYC firefighters. There was a 9/11 book written about them, some who lived and some who died, called “Braving the Waves - Rockaway Rises and Rises Again”. At the beginning of each chapter there is a story about one the many historic fires that have quickly spread and wiped-out large sections of the beach over the years. Sometimes the constant ocean winds are a blessing, sometimes they’re not. Rockway will rise again!
Your family is in my prayers.
Maryland has had but a few category IV hurricanes in history....the last being Hazel in early 50s
This issue is not about the storm being something special relative to tropical storms but rather where it is hitting and the myriad that entails
Thanks for that info. Bless them all.
Upon waking, I find the lights and sump pumps still operable, and no trees / limbs poking thru in here where they shouldn't be.
From the WunderMap for this area, it would seem that Hurricane Benghazi is pivoting / rotating around this neck of the woods as it moves slowly to the west.
Interestingly (judging by radar views), the back side of it seems to be consistently breaking up a bit just to the east of me, with green cloudy patches seeming to thin out on radar prior to arrival here.
Anyway, currently light rain @ 50°, pressure 28.38 and rising, w/ winds having calmed and holding steady at ~10-15 mph.
It's surely not over yet, but am feeling quite grateful at the moment, esp. when hearing of other places that have endured a much harder pounding !
carry on,
Tom
Video of Breezy Point fire. Reports now are at least 50 houses burned to the ground.

WOW....I just turned the tv on to hear this news...wondered if the footage I was seeing was live...guess so. Scary!
An interesting side note...landed on msnbc, where, coincidentally, or not, the on-screen logo reverses from msnbc to “lean forward”. hmmmm.
Actually, I am the one that didn't make myself clear enough. When I said that we ALL appreciated his insight , I was including you in that "all". I never thought for a second that you were denigrating him.
No 'cult' here but kudos are due where they are due.
FReegards FRiend.
Now that's scary!
670K without power? Hope crews from around the country can help ConEd get those homes some electricity quickly. Probably mostly lines down, I would think, plus some plants offline.
Storm totals are currently at 7.1 million.
wow! 7.1 mil in the dark... My prayers go out to them. I hate it when a storm here in Oklahoma knocks my power off for even a few hours. God bless the folks on the East Coast, and I pray that Sandy peters out quickly.

“If a cat 1 creates this amount of issues, the folks up north will need to some rethinking as a cat 2 or 3 would be a doozy for them. I cant imaging what they would do with a cat 4.”
There isn’t a city out there that is prepared for a cat. 4.
Thanks for posting that interactive status map. It brought me some relief to see that the area where our daughter lives still has power.
