They DID know what was going on. People were telling them there were going to die SOON and they needed help. So, what did they tell them, "Sorry, we need some REAL-TIME information."?

They had real time intelligence from the surveillance drones. They had real time intelligence from communication with those under fire. Intelligence does not get any better than that and it is in real time. If Dwight D Eisenhower used the same standards in WWII we would still be waiting in the South of England to launch D Day.
