This breaking news about the WH’s order to CIA operatives on the ground in Benghazi to stand down and not try to rescue the four Americans is stunning.
We know the WH had the intel. And even if they didn’t, the right decision would have been to let the operatives on the ground take the action they deemed appropriate. The only reason I can think of for not doing so is that Obama preferred to let the ambassador and the other three men take their chances rather than order a rescue that might make the situation worse. “Worse,” in Obama’s opinion, being anything that might make him look bad. He was willing to take the chance that those men might die, assuming that there would be no consequences for him if they did.
