QUESTION: We were sitting around, talking about Libya, and we were reading and became aware of reports that the State Department refused extra security for our embassy in Benghazi, Libya, prior to the attacks that killed four Americans.
Obama:So as soon as we found out that the Benghazi consulate was being overrun, I was on the phone with my national security team and I gave them three instructions. Number one, beef up our security and procedures, not just in Libya, but at every embassy and consulate in the region.
The question was about reports that the ambassador had requested extra security in the past and it had not been provided. Obama admits he didn't provide extra security until after the attack took place (and the ambassador was dead). Literally closing the barn door after the horse had escaped.
Obama never did answer the question about why security wasn't beef up previous to the attack, at the time the ambassador requested it.
Either way, Benghazi consulate was attacked June 6th (I think), the day after we killed al-Libi in drone strike. That alone should have been the wake-up call that al Zawahiri (sp?) meant serious revenge.
Obama most certainly would have been notified immediately about that one also. Three months passed, during which IIRC they reduced security.
