They are shoulder-launched surface-to-air missiles.

What’s a manpad?

1. MANPADS - Man-portable air-defense systems. Essentially a shoulder fired missile. Correct usage calls for all caps.

2. Manpad - manpad, a device used by men to pad their trousers at the crotch, similar to the archaic codpiece, but not so much in your face. Best modern example is the Rolling Stone magazine cover of Albert Gore Jr, with the manpad airbrushed in to indicate a larger “package” than his natural endowment. Gore currently has reversed the orientation of his manpad, much in the manner of the trademarked “Depends”.

“What’s a manpad?”

No, it is not another version of a “man cave”. MANPADS is a man portable air defense system. Think: FIM-92 “Stinger” shoulder fired surface-to-air missile.
