The Pew poll is devastating, just devastating. Before the debate, Obama had a 51 - 43 lead; now, Romney has a 49 - 45 lead. That's a simply unprecedented reversal for a candidate in October. Before Obama had leads on every policy issue and personal characteristic; now Romney leads in almost all of them. Obama's performance gave Romney a 12 point swing! I repeat: a 12 point swing.
Romney's favorables are above Obama's now. Yes, you read that right. Romney's favorables are higher than Obama's right now. That gender gap that was Obama's firewall? Over in one night:
Currently, women are evenly divided (47% Obama, 47% Romney). Last month, Obama led Romney by 18 points (56% to 38%) among women likely voters.
Seriously: has that kind of swing ever happened this late in a campaign? Has any candidate lost 18 points among women voters in one night ever? And we are told that when Obama left the stage that night, he was feeling good. That's terrifying. On every single issue, Obama has instantly plummeted into near-oblivion. He still has some personal advantages over Romney - even though they are all much diminished. Obama still has an edge on Medicare, scores much higher on relating to ordinary people, is ahead on foreign policy, and on being moderate, consistent and honest (only 14 percent of swing voters believe Romney is honest). But on the core issues of the economy and the deficit, Romney is now kicking the president's ass:
By a 37% to 24% margin, more swing voters say Romney would improve the job situation. Swing voters favor Romney on the deficit by a two-to-one (41% vs. 20%) margin.... Romney has gained ground on several of these measures since earlier in the campaign.

Maybe what he really saw was Obama in a real debate for the first time since he became a national figure. The Dim primary debates in 2007 and 2008 were mostly minor disagreements over details, and McCain presented no challenge to Obama's lies and BS.
Maybe what people saw was the real Obama being strongly challenged for the first time, and he was unable to engage and his handlers and MSM protectors could not jump in to save him.
I agree. There will be all sorts of smarmy sob stories, and excrescences of inchoate emotionalism. The media will take due note of "how well Obama connects" and are all set with the only story possible: "Obama is the Comeback Kid! Rocky Obama! Single Mom says 'Obama saved my life!'"
Etc etc ad nauseam.

I think you hit on something very important. This broken spiritedness can be seen in the very public meltdown of some of his big celebrity and “journalist” supporters, but I hadn’t thought about the fact that this reaction had to be occurring in a more private manner amongst millions of the little folk
And I think that the damage can’t really be undone. You can’t put Humpty Dumpty back together again, even if he does considerably better in the subsequent debates. Those initial mental images of utter and total failure are simply not going to be erased. They happened and nothing can make them unhappen.
Most of these broken-spirited folks will probably still vote for Obama, but they’re definitely going to be quiet about it and not trying to convince others to vote for Obama as well. It’s bound to dry up their financial support for Obama as well. And some of the disillusioned may simply choose to not vote at all. It all adds up to extremely bad news for Zero.
Alternatively, Romney’s knockout performance has helped to energize a lack-luster base. Many of us view him as a hopeless RINO, which he may be, but by George FINALLY someone stood up to the Obamination and said many of the things that no one else has dared say and which we have been wanting to say ourselves to the SOB for a long time. Romney showed he was no milquetoast in the debate, and while maybe not a complete conservative, at least a fine anti-Obama champion.
It hasn't happened this time. The pre-debate polls were obviously rigged.
Agreed on not getting cocky, but I'm not so sure about the D +6 sample. It's that special time of year where pollsters want to save face.
Just so you know my FRiend, my question was a serious one. I really believe this theory about that 181mil may be being used to buy votes and think someone ought to try to start connecting the dots.
That’s exactly it. And they, the libs, did blame the moderator, Kerry, the altitude and Romney for not being the real Romney. Everything but he’s never been challenged like this before.

Yes, Sullivan is a big liberal and Obama supporter. That’s why stories like this are so telling. Even his most ardent supporters believe it is over.

We always were far ahead, but not of ourselves. The polls know they have to be accurate when the “real” polls open and they are coming into line.
This race, from the beginning, has been like a drag race between a stock pinto and a Shelby Cobra. The Pinto (obama) had a wild head start but needed to be far ahead and that NEVER happened.
The only way Romney is losing is with a devastating October surprise. I don’t expect it. I’m no fan, but one thing is clear, the man knows what he is doing. He’s going to continue to pulverize the president in the same fashion that a professional football team would pulverize a high school team.
It never was a contest. The media only tried to make it look like one. Romney is like secretariat and we are coming up on the Belmont stakes.

It was over the second he called himself “eyecandy” on the View. What man does that? It’s disgusting. Barf.
I make it a point to bring this up to my apolitical or lefty friends. They are always repulsed. Works like a charm.

who knows! but to think that this liberal considers Romney "more extreme" than Bush/Cheney (who i don't think are extreme at all) is hysterical... doesn't he realize that Romney is pretty liberal??? boy that first debate sure has the left scrambling and grasping and throwing anything and everything to see what sticks... very entertaining...

As far as a President not really wanting the office anymore, sadly “Big George” H.W. Bush admitted that if he’d known what a stain that Clinton would be on the Office that he would have run harder. The reality was that Bush had to assume a lot of the Presidency during Reagan’s second term, so after four years as the official President, he was spent, and more than a little burned out.
Sigh.
It’s just an expression; a rhetorical question.
