Welcome to the post-apocalypse cityscape of Detroit - before the apocalypse happens.
The men and women of the Detroit Police Department believe the city is too dangerous to enter, and they want citizens to know it.
Detroit Police Officer Association (DPOA) Attorney Donato Iorio said officers are holding the "Enter At Your Own Risk" rally at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in front of Comerica Park to remind the public that the officers are overworked, understaffed, and at times, fearful for their lives.
"Detroit is America's most violent city, its homicide rate is the highest in the country and yet the Detroit Police Department is grossly understaffed," Iorio told WWJ's Kathryn Larson. "The DPOA believes that there is a war in Detroit, but there should be a war on crime, not a war on its officers."
Iorio says the once 2,000 strong force is shrinking rapidly; since the start of summer, hundreds of officers have left the department.
"These are the men and women who we look to protect us... and police officers can't protect you if they're not there. Officers are leaving simply because they can't afford to stay in Detroit and work 12 hour shifts for what they are getting paid... These police officers are beyond demoralized, these officers are leaving hand over fist because they can no longer afford to stay on the department and protect the public," he said.
And that's why Iorio cautions those who enter the city to be wary.
Where is Robocop when we need him?

...and Rush Limbaugh took heat for calling it “New Fallujah”.
Thanks for that info. The pictures is clearer now.
At least the spray paint business seems to be thriving there.
Thanks for the ping Squawk...
Robocop shoots in Hamilton, about an hour west of Toronto (~4 hours east of Detroit). It’s the worst we could come up with without endangering the cast & crew.
If the Taj Mahal was moved to Detroit - in two years it would be a run down crack house... and no one, not one living soul would want to live there.
Detroit: the city that has used EVERY liberal idea for decades... One big seething Michael Moore angry pity party... No entrepreneur's going to take on that open sewer...
My grandfather retired from the Detroit police force as a sergeant in 1963. My dad retired as an Executive Lieutenant in 1976. The Detroit police force of today is nothing but a reflection of the current city council administration, a bunch of lazy do-nothings.
Each and every one of those bastards who took part in that "Enter At Your Own Risk" rally at Comerica park on Saturday afternoon just prior to the Tiger game should have had their names recorded and ultimately fired.
In the real world they would have but this is Detroit where incompetence is the accepted normal behavior........
Don't kid yourself, property is being gobbled up by very wealthy investors in the prime areas on both sides of Jefferson Ave. leading towards the Pointes.......Inner city, not so much but they have been auctioning off property. The biggest problem with buying that property and hanging on to it is paying the back taxes then the taxes going forward...........
Besides, unless the city iteself gets repopulated with manufacturing plants such as the one I worked for, nobody wants to live there. Folks who live downtown in the new condos and lofts work down there. Nobody in their right mind would live downtown then commute to Troy to work considering the horrendous traffic volume on I-75.
Great Photos — we’ve seen the “after” photos, the “before” photos are just as important. Seen the same thing with before and after photos in South Africa — and recently Gary, Indiana ‘after” photos are making the rounds.
Put ‘em side by side so ALL the damage shows. Yes, heartbreaking.
Bullsh*t police unions. Gutless wonders who shamelessly promote "first responder" heroics and then back out when the pay is not right.
Here is a site with many photos of “The ruins of Detroit”
Hudson’s is where the REAL Santa Claus was when I was growing up.

Dust off and nuke it from orbit...It’s the only way to be sure.
“Those who dont flee.”
When nobody is left except those in public housing, how do the bills get paid? Nobody wants the real estate.

I don’t know; at the welfare reservations near me the users aren’t normally paying customers.

It is what I noticed when I was eating lunch in the compuware lunch room a few floors up about 7 years ago. I looked down on the street below where there were about 8 storefronts. Most were closed or going out of business. There was no foot traffic except street people. Each one would check the contents of the trash cans as they went by.
There’s nothing in the trash cans of value if everyone there is LOOKING for things in the trash can, rather than putting things in it. It’s becoming the norm for the whole city.
Back in the late 80’s early 90’s I drove a car carrier out of Oshawa ON. My first trip to Dearborn scared the heck out of me. After going through U.S. customs at the Ambassador bridge, I was a little confused about the directions I had been given. We had to take the long way through Detroit because of the height of our loads. I saw a couple of cops in a car on Fort St. and asked them for help. They directed me to go to Rosa Parks street (or Drive) then through something called “Mexico Town”. Then a series of turns to get me to Dearborn. Their final instruction to me was, DON’T stop at any red lights. They said to pace myself to get the “greens” and if I couldn’t, look around and proceed through the red light. Comforting, eh? Here I am with about $250,000 worth of new vehicles on, and that’s all they could do for me.
At least they gave you good advice.
I know somebody in Newark who was complaining to the city about drug traffic in vacant houses nearby; they expected the city to pursue the property owners, but in the end it turned out the city had seized the properties years before due to tax liens. They didn’t have the money to demolish them, they had no buyers who wanted them, so they were just abandoned crackhouses left to rot...
Newark’s population has never reached the levels it had been prior to the race riots of the 1960s; if it ever does top that it will be a Hispanic city (like many other US cities).
