They were NOT armed and were NOT part of the consulate security team. They came after the attack had already begun. Their jobs were to seek out heavy weapons among the militias and nothing to do with security.
They did try to help the ambassador escape by car and were gunned down.
Where did you get the idea that the former SEALS were unnarmed? The State Dept policies on embassy personnel do not cover those guys. You don’t go on weapons hunts unarmed and you sure as heck don’t gallup over to a consulate that is under fire without procuring weapons- one way or another.
