This, I believe, is correct. He was flattering them by saying they all perform flawlessly all the time, while he (little self-deprecating smirk) had one off night.
Of course, musical performers have Autotune, recorded backup tracks, support people ... and anyone who has ever attended a performance knows that a performer is sometimes better, sometimes worse, and never "flawless." But why let reality intrude into a cloud of leftist mutual-admiration opium-smoke?
Or it could mean...
