FISHERSVILLE, Va. (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has described his disparaging remarks about the 47% of Americans who don't pay federal income taxes as "not elegantly stated." Now he's calling them "just completely wrong."
Romney had contended that nearly half of Americans consider themselves "victims" and are dependent on government.

Just takes the sting out of anything that Obama could say at the next debate.
I don’t have a problem with it.
Good for Romney. Those comments were wrong.
Agreed. Big mistake. huge
That's what everyone else has been saying about Akin, who was abandoned by Romney and the rest of the GOP elite.
Full version of article and video clip of Romney interview:
Was very upset about this at first.
But, to be frank, I think this will take the wind out of any 47 attacks in the next debates.
He needed to do it, and it wasn’t a big mistake. It would have been brought back up again at some point.
Obama’s ASSociated Press
I heard him say the same thing on Hannity tonight. He shouldn’t have apologized.
A lot of people agree with the idea of the 47%. He could have restated it differently and ran with it. Obama will slam him with it now.
I don’t think Obama wanted to touch it last night because he knows how people feel about the increasing numbers of people being put on welfare.
Oh well...
And this won’t hurt him besides having it be in the news cycle tomorrow (retractions get much less coverage so don’t see it beyond that). People LIKE politicians to admit error.
His comment was right, but let’s be honest, it doesn’t matter how much he explains it was just a strategy comment about whom to focus on in terms of getting votes, many just won’t get it. It’s better to just say “oops.”
This hurt him and didn’t help him even after his numerous restatements to make his intent more clear. I have no issue with the retraction tonight.
Insulting a specific 47% of voters as Dem dependent moochers when trying to win the POTUS election is just stupid and dangerous, especially when many of them are NOT married to the D party as Mitts suggested. many (no not most) lean R.
He never meant to say that in public.
More entertainingly, I didn't forget those two 47% truthers confronting me less than a week ago over my comments, for my saying that the 47% Romney comment was a big mistake, and them both declaring it ‘the truth’ and saying that any talk different was JUST liberal media spin.
How do ya respond when their argument is that Romney spoke ‘the truth’?? I just ignored those two responses until tonight. Now BOOM!
nuke 1 at #54 and nuke 2 at #17
I hope they try to claim that the AP source just proves its part of the conspiracy. Zombies!
I disagree. The same day this video surfaced, I was on the Yahoo Finance site looking at stocks. Yahoo put a poll up asking whether you agreed or disagreed with Romney’s statement (unscientific).
By the time I left the site, 20,000 had voted and 78% agreed with Romney’s statement. After that, I visited other sites and the responses were similar to Yahoo’s poll.
Everyone thinks the majority of Americans are stupid, uninformed and aren’t paying attention. Well, I will tell you that isn’t true and most of us are sick and tired of what has happened under Obama and others before him.
We all know that half of this country can’t pull the welfare wagon with half of the rest the country riding in it. And Romney was right, most of them will not vote their bennies and freebies away.
I saw this thread about 30 minutes ago and started to panic, thinking Romney made some horrible mistake tonight on Hannity.
Then I actually watched the entire interview. Taken in context, it was a pretty minor concession by Romney that fit well within the context of the entire discussion.
However, since the woman from AP who wrote the article at the link is obviously a big lefty, she couldn’t get off her 47% derangement syndrome and decided to try and create a big fuss where in my opinion there was none.
These Hannity remarks are a non-story. Romney just needs to be ready for debate number II where you know the moderators are going to want to talk about birth control and gay rights all night long in the hopes that Mitt either alienates the conservative base or alienates voters in the middle.
You know, it doesn’t bother me.
He seems like he is an honest guy, and if he says he didn’t mean something ot that he was wrong, then I believe he means that.
The man can speak for himself, and I do respect that about him.
Romney doesn’t need to do anymore flip flops and retractions. He did very well last night and I was ecstatic about the debate.
Don’t undo the momentum and kick Obozo’s rear end with the truth. People understand when you are telling the truth.
He referred to the 47% who suck on government teat AND who are Bammy supporters are the ones he’ll never reach and shouldn’t bother with. Funny how everyone misses that part. Of course, even with 1/3 of US welfare recipients in California, even 47% is a bit high.
Besides, I thought Obamaphone wench proved the point nicely and that certainly went viral.
He said it tonight on Hannity, the KING of the RNC Koolaid drinkers.
Yep, add both Hannity and Mitt to that HUGE MSM conspiracy. Dont listen to anyone but Rush.
yep, in a 'closed' session, he talked down half the population to a group of people who evidently believe themselves to be better thans...and then we had a bunch of zombies here, even to this day, stating it was the gospel truth and in actuality was something that *needed* to be said...
what got me was the sincerity of the attitude that those votes were to be considered a write off and unworthy of representation...at least in that closed room...
mittens needs those votes, and this apology admission tells me that he knows it too, but at least he now acts like that at least a percentage of the 47% matters to him...
maybe the feet to the fire thing will work afterall...
but that would require him having a chance to actually win, wouldnt it ???

That's my take too. Thanks for summarizing it.
He took a valid point and screwed it up with his elitist buddy talk recorded without his knowledge. Then the zombies were told that it was some divine truth to be fought for and they went out marching, a few pinging lucky me.
Don't be surprised if ...
