Add CNNs James Carville to the list of Democrats questioning President Barack Obamas performance against Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney on Wednesday.
In CNNs wrap-up of its debate coverage, Carville, a campaign adviser to former President Bill Clinton, gave Obamas campaign high marks but added that Obama probably didnt go by the playbook his campaign wanted him to.
Lets be real, Carville said. They have run a very good campaign thus far. I dont think that President Obama did what this campaign wanted him to do. I think he was off his game tonight. But lets dont go overboard here. It will be like a big sort of pushback.
My point is this President Obama came in, he wanted to have a conversation. It takes two people to have a conversation. Mitt Romney came in with a chainsaw. Hes trying to talk to a chainsaw.

The reason why he might be wound up tight is he knows the investigations will be coming after Mitt Romney is in office and Eric Holder can’t defend the whole group of criminals.
Yes, I know Obama has little substance, but he can make a show. The curiosity is why didnt he even try?
This makes no sense - how could looking like an idiot and getting trounced possibly work in his favor? And what makes you think he didn't try? He's been fed every line he's spoken for 4 years running and cannot think on his feet.
I didn’t see the same debate everyone else saw, I suppose.
Obama essentially promised to implement Romney’s plan for America in his second term, and Romney essentially reminded him that he’d had four years and failed to do it.
So, Romney wins.
That, and by now most people have O’s number. What he says and does have only incidental relations with one another.
Romney wins for a second more important reason. This is the first time he has been able to present himself unmediated to the broader American public. Mostly he spends millions on speaking tours that get reported with a five second voice-over with the talking heads telling us what he said. Tonight he spoke directly to America, and America can see he’s a good guy, and a reasonable guy. And he has a better command of the facts than our current president, and a better grasp of the problems and the solutions.
This is one of the few debates, maybe the only one, in which the moderator didn’t try to debate the Republican himself. So, I was pleased with the moderator on that score. He was respectful of both parties and if Obama managed to steal more than his share of time, still, Romney managed to say what he had to say too.
I’m not a big Romney fan, but I was pleased with his performance. Obama needs a much bigger October Surprise today than he did yesterday.
Have people say things to him like “ Were you a part of any criminal activity in Obama’s administration “ ..... “ Investigations “ ... “ Jail time “ .....
Result of a couple decades of reading and buying their own “everyone gets a trophy/we are all special’ propaganda.
Fighting back is WRONG! We must discuss until you see and accept ‘my’ side because I’m special!
People need to understand just how far removed from reality liberals are. I mean they think you can dialog with Jihadis and ‘win them over’ for God sake. You can bet that as their world continues to crash around them (with reality reasserting itself) the freakouts will multiply and become violence.
Bank on it.
He pulls a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue! That's the Chicago way ...
Tonight Obama was a BB gun. Romney was a .50 caliber machine gun.
And they label one who does as mean spirited!
I mean they think you can dialog with Jihadis and win them over
While reading the 'conservation' comment that is exactly what I thought of!
Thanks! He was leaving for Europe tonight and postponed it to midnight to watch the debate.
Probably stoned out of his mind half into jihadist rage.
In some settings, he can’t hide that he’s just a rabid animal.
A few things here.
My son pointed out that when Romney first shook hands with Obama, Romney said, smiling, “I’m coming for you tonight”, reading his lips. I watched the replay, and spot on, that’s exactly what was said.
Never vote early. After tonight, what do you suppose these early Obama voters are thinking now?
There is no way Obama takes Romney in future debates. He may be fresher and more precise, but Romney has already met the test and is way to well informed and articulate to get rolled as Obama was tonight.
And Obama can’t roll it back. It’s done.
Lastly, it’s true. Jim Lehrer has no whites in his eyes! I read that, checked it out on the replay!
Like saying something over and over thinking someone will believe it? I have five sons....
If true, that must have really rattled Obama.
That, plus the "lost and found" tapes that showed up Tuesday and Wednesday, must have really thrown Obama for a loop.
I thought that his visit to Hoover Dam sounded like a very odd move when it was announced on Tuesday. It just seemed like a strange thing to do when you've gone to Vegas to prep for a hugely important debate.
Probably the "debate preparations" reached the point where Obama said "this is hopeless" and decided to pack it in and go sightseeing.
“I know this is redundant but Carville looks like hell.
Is he sick?”
No, he’s just not aging gracefully.
This is the real Obama. It won’t get any better for him. And next comes Ryan taking down that fool Biden. That will seal the deal. IMHO.
For his wife’s sake, I’m glad he’s okay...relatively speaking.
