International sanctions could trigger a popular uprising in Iran like the revolt in Egypt that toppled president Hosni Mubarak, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman predicted on Sunday.
"The opposition demonstrations that took place in Iran in June 2009 will come back in even greater force," Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said in an interview with the Haaretz daily.
"In my view, there's going to be an Iranian-style Tahrir revolution," he said, referring to last year's mass protests in Cairo's Tahrir Square that forced Mubarak to quit.
"The young generation is sick of being held hostage and sacrificing their future," Lieberman said.
"The situation in Iran, and the feelings of the man on the street, is one of economic catastrophe," he said.
"Just this week there was another devaluation of the Iranian rial .... There's a shortage of basic goods, a rise in crime, and people are trying to flee the country, sending money abroad," said Lieberman.
He also addressed Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahus speech to the United Nations General Assembly in which he warned about the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran, with the help of a sketch of a comic-book bomb with a line drawn in red marker showing the state in the device's development which he said Iran must not be allowed to pass.
"You can laugh, but everyone is talking about... the red line," Lieberman told Haaretz.
In a second interview which aired on Channel 2 News Sunday, Lieberman said that it may not be necessary for Israel to attack Iran's nuclear facilities, since the economic sanctions on the Islamic Republic are effective. He emphasized, however, that all options are still on the table. .....

This is typical of the left wing nitwits around today.
The Iranian struggle a few years ago was a genuine popular revolt, of students, women, young people, and the like. It was crushed, and Obama smiled when they crushed it.
The uprisings of the Arab Spring, on the other hand, were all guided by Muslim terrorist fanatics, and helped by Obama and the EU. Of course terrorists can win a revolution, especially when they have our help. They don’t mind how many people the slaughter.
And, incidentally, the “popular” uprising in Syria is also run by terrorists. The current Syrian leadership is evil, but the revolutionaries who seek to displace them are far worse.
And they are likely enough to win, since they enjoy killing and raping and burning, and Hillary and the left-wing nut balls who control our government and media are eager to help them do it, under the pretence of Democrating reform.
What—send more university feminists, again? I wonder if some political folks are only trying to foist them on the Eyerainians for killin’ and getting rid of ‘em over here.
Yeah, right...
“This is typical of the left wing nitwits around today.”
Exactly, and Avigdor Lieberman, Israel’s Foreign Minister, was until just recently a right-wing lightning rod that the left wing nitwits hated with a passion. It seems he is folding.
Somebody has been talking this Sheit for years. The Iranians are going to rise up and toos the Imams and Ahmadinejhad out.
It’s Bullsheit and they all know it.
The Iranians are not going to rise up until an Israeli nuke turns them into a puff of smoke, and the smoke rises.
Anyone who might have risen up was disheartened when Oabma didn’t offer any aid, or they are dead.
“Anyone who might have risen up was disheartened when Oabma didnt offer any aid, or they are dead.”
Now just a cotton pickin’ minit there, Venturer. They were not killed on TV, except maybe on Iranian TV which doesn’t count, so that means they are still alive and a-rarin’ to rise up./s
