Top intelligence official backtracks on Libya story, says initial assessment premature

The office of the United States' top intelligence official appeared to take the blame Friday for the Obama administration's changing narrative on the U.S. Consulate attack in Libya, saying administration officials who initially claimed the attack was spontaneous did so based on intelligence officials' guidance.

The statement by Shawn Turner, spokesman for Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, was put out late Friday -- at the close of a tumultuous week for the Obama administration over the Libya attack.

The White House has had to steadily backpedal over initial claims that the attack was inspired by protests in Cairo over an anti-Islam film and was not pre-planned. Top officials started last week calling the attack "terrorism."

Turner's statement marked a complete reversal from the initial claims.

"As we learned more about the attack, we revised our initial assessment to reflect new information indicating that it was a deliberate and organized terrorist attack carried out by extremists," Turner said. "It remains unclear if any group or person exercised overall command and control of the attack, and if extremist group leaders directed their members to participate. However, we do assess that some of those involved were linked to groups affiliated with or sympathetic to Al Qaeda."

Turner, though, sought to explain that officials who discussed the attack as spontaneous did so based on intelligence community assessments.

"In the immediate aftermath, there was information that led us to assess that the attack began spontaneously following protests earlier that day at our embassy in Cairo," he said. "We provided that initial assessment to Executive Branch officials and members of Congress, who used that information to discuss the attack publicly and provide updates as they became available. Throughout our investigation we continued to emphasize that information gathered was preliminary and evolving."

However, sources have told...

We really need to know who the AlQaida agent in the threat assessment group is ~ and there is no doubt there's at least one ~ maybe more.

This is no different than back in the days when we had commies in the state department. They are there even if their bosses don't want to believe it.

I guess I’d make a lousy federal government employee. There is no way in hell I’d fall on my sword for Barry Soetoro and Mrs. Slick Willie.

They’re the people who talked directly to the press? This story seems odd too.

Looks like Obama found someone to fall on their own sword.

Now the Obama media will run with this story for the weekend and then declare it over.

Our country is screwed.

Nixon was forced to resign for a lot less.

Hillary still has her job after a catastrophic failure and dereliction of duty...
As does Obozo.
This is cause for dismissal of Hillary and impeachment of Obama.

Allah and Mohammad exercise overall command and control over Muslim terrorists. Islam instructs and motivates Muslims in that manner.

Even now this CORRUPT, LYING, Admin continues to "spin."

As if this LARGE, "Coordinated" attack by those Islamic Jihadi Terrorists, would NOT have been "led" by some sort of "leadership?"

Of course not; they (dozens or hundreds) all of a sudden simply decided to attack the embassy en mass cuz they had nothing better to do?

Does Turner think we all just fell off the turnip truck?

So how many souls are going to cover for this fool in this administration, "the Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper who called the Muslim Brotherhood "largely secular" with a straight face?

After reading the entire article, have concluded Mr. Turner did not fall on his sword for zer0 and hilary. In fact the article points out they (zer0 and hilary) lied, without putting it in print.

Oh there was leadership! And the real kicker is the attackers most likely used weapons supplied by the United States. This Administration wants the return of the Ottoman Empire!

BREAKING!! Al Qaeda claims responsibility for Benghazi attack
afp ^ | 9/15/2012 | afp

Posted on Saturday, September 15, 2012 9:44:31 AM by barryobi

AL-Qaeda said the deadly attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya was in revenge for the killing of the network's number two Sheikh Abu Yahya al-Libi, SITE Intelligence Group reported.

“The killing of Sheikh Abu Yahya only increased the enthusiasm and determination of the sons of (Libyan independence hero) Omar al-Mokhtar to take revenge upon those who attack our Prophet,” said al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula said in a statement, quoted by the US-based monitoring group.

Al-Qaida’s Yemen-based offshoot did not claim direct responsibility for Tuesday's attack on the US consulate in Benghazi that killed the US ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens, and three other Americans.

But it stressed that “the uprising of our people in Libya, Egypt and Yemen against America and its embassies is a sign to notify the United States that its war is not directed against groups and organisations ... but against the Islamic nation that has rebelled against injustice.”

The statement comes four days after al-Qaida chief Ayman al-Zawahiri issued a video eulogising Libi, his late deputy and propaganda chief who was killed in a drone strike in June.

Mohammed al-Megaryef, the head of Libya's national assembly, said today that the attack on the US consulate in Benghazi was planned and “meticulously executed.”

One thing children learn as a part of growing up is that if you lie about something, that one lie is never enough, and to keep the lie going you invent other lies and others, and soon the whole lie unravels.

As adults, liars follow the same process as children, only hoping that by the time the sea of lies becomes obvious to anyone paying attention, no one is actually paying attention anymore.

That’s our government.
