I imagine the last thing any moron would do would be to actually screw with him. I seem to remember a story about him running into/over someone who threatened him.

It was, iirc, the other way around. Someone was driving around on his property (he has a "ranch" out in Maryland), so Liddy went out and confronted the guy. With a baseball bat. While the guy was still driving around. And got clipped. Think he ended up with a broken arm or dislocated shoulder.
Of course Liddy couldn't have gone out with a gun, because of his convictions. The legal ones, not ethical/moral. First time I heard Liddy on the radio someone asked him just how many guns he had. He responded with "As a convicted felon, I'm not allowed to own or possess firearms. However Mrs. Liddy has 85*. And she's getting three more next week."
(* or some other number that falls into the "proverbial 'small arsenal'" range. I can't remember the exact number except it was in the 80s).
