When you look the devil in the eye through a human he has co-opted and defuse or otherwise de-escalate the situation.

I offer a way out short of that, if I can, but don’t capitulate or we no longer control the prison. You only establish a feel for the line by having crossed it.
Your training was to keep people alive and mostly unhurt.
That may be a useful skill to have in the future.
