Asked what he thought of Romney's remarks, Ryan told the Nevada station: "He was obviously inarticulate in making this point." Ryan went on to say the point the Republicans are making is that, under the Obama economy, government dependency is up and economic stagnation is up.
Asked if he thought Romney regrets the remarks, Ryan says he thinks Romney would have said it differently, adding, "that's for sure."
Really?
You think social security benefits aren’t taxable?
Social security benefits are taxable depending on the total amount of income you have from all sources.
It’s the total income, not the fact that you have social security coming to you, that determines if you pay taxes on your income and how much.
That’s the truth. So, if you as an individual don’t pay taxes, it’s not because your social security benefits aren’t taxable - they ARE depending on your total income - it’s because you don’t have enough total income to owe taxes.
As for Romney planning to tax social security, it is already subject to tax under the guidelines I described.
Second, show me where Romney said anything about doing something along the lines of what you claimed. He didn’t.
In fact, nowhere does he say he plans to tax people, period, who don’t now pay taxes. Because he doesn’t plan to.
He said people who don’t pay taxes wouldn’t get excited about a proposed tax cut, which is his actual proposal, because they already don’t pay taxes.
I believe Ryan understand middle America better than Romney does and through that understanding sees how those comments can sound shrewd.
In my post # 18, where I said people have paid into social security and “medicaid”, of course I meant to type “mediCARE” instead.
Romney’s formulation was terrible - both substantively and politically.
Blame Obama and the Dems for inflicting a cycle of dependency, not the person struggling to find a job in this rotten economy.
1. I am glad the crisis happened because it will bring the infighting in Boston to a head quickly. Reagan had a similar campaign meltdown in September 1980. Remember the Klu Klux Klan error?
2. Romney has got to get away from the pabulum, Obamas a nice guy and Im a nice guy, too gets him zero, nothing, nada. Whoever is advocating this caution in Boston (Stu Stevens) needs to be thrown under the bus; it is not working.
3. I had thought with the Paul Ryan pick that they understood they needed to go bold. And they did over the Mediscare, essentially drawing even with the Dems over this issue, which is a huge win.
4. Romney needs to focus on jobs, growth, tax cuts, tax reform the entire supply side agenda. Let Ryan loose to attack Obama.
5. My greatest disappointment is that I thought Romney was sufficiently disciplined to not make such stupid remarks in a public setting. It also means he learned nothing from the flare-up during the FL primary when he got into real trouble with, Im not worried about the poor. I am not impressed with people who dont learn from their mistakes.
6. Here is how Reagan would have answered the question: our success will depend upon our ability to convince people who are trapped into government dependency under the failed Obama economy that my economic policies will lift all Americans. In other words, blame the Obama administration and the poverty warriors, not the dependent class. Romney got it exactly backwards. This is what hurt.
As for those who have the higher income, they would not apply for SS benefits. Instead, they would wait until later when their total income falls. There are people out there in their 70s and possibly into their 80s who never applied to SS and as an asset that benefit accrues and when they eventually retire, that SS benefit will be larger.
And if Pomney and the GOP go after the the 47 percent, they have to go after senoirs not paying income tax. Because that group is a sizable percent of the 47%
As for your other statement, you are correct. Instead of tax increases, the loopholes are closed. No child credits, mortgage deductions, properety tax deductions, state income tax deductions, education credits, etc etc. Your tax rate may not go up, or may possibly diminish, but the amount in taxes you pay will go up.
I'll tell you what is going to happen. The formal economy, in which production and consumption are taxable, will shrink. And the informal economy, in which only consumption is taxable, will expand. We will end up like Mexico where 60% of the workforce is working "off the book".
DUH.... you THINK??? This is POLITICO. I was out at a watering hole/dinner establishment with CNN streaming on the TV last night. It was sooooo disgusting, even without the sound as they spent the entire HOUR hammering on Romney, even interviewing Jimma Carter's grandson, saying Pres. Carter told him “extraordinary and congratulations” on a great find. BARF alert.
This is probably NOT what Ryan meant. Possibly out of context. My fellow Wisconsite is a pretty sharp guy. Please give him a little leeway here. The media especially POLITICO the lefty rag is out to kiss zippy’s backside, you all know this.
You claimed Romney was a threat to start taxing social security which would hurt a lot of people.
Yes, you DID.
All of that is false and based on false premises.
He has not, and won’t, propose to start taxing something that is already taxable (duh).
What he said was that if you don’t pay income taxes now, you probably won’t be drawn to his proposal to CUT TAXES, because you already don’t pay any taxes.
That’s about the size of the whole kerfluffle.
Why come here and pointlessly frighten people about Mitt Romney supposedly going to start taxing their social security????
That gives aid and comfort to the Left, the Media, and the Democrats.
Oh, sorry, in that last sentence I repeated myself three times.
Boomers got us into this entitlement mess with a long string of Democrat-run Congresses and the occasional President to sign Great Society garbage -- Johnson, Carter, Clinton, Obama -- so they can get us out.
I'm not frightening people, I'm pointing out reality.
The govt needs more revenue and they will get it.
There is no way around it. If they are going to go after the 47 % that don't pay taxes they have to tax the old people.
Sure, they may try something else. A $20 per ton tax on carbon won't show up on your tax bill but you will still pay it and the rich people like that because it is a regressive tax. They could put $3 pr bottle tax on booze and the rich people would like that because it is regressive.

The election-winning topic of Marxist Redistribution of Wealth has been delivered to you on a Silver Platter by David Corn of the Liberal Agenda Media, and you Ryan, choose to stab Romney in the back?
The Liberal Agenda Media spent all day yesterday telling their Liberal audiences that 47 % of Voters pay NO Personal Federal Income taxes. What a great promotion they performed for us Conservatives, and you stab Romney in the back?
Get on board the Smack-Down Express, Ryan, or shut your mouth!
Does anyone believe that Mitt would have a $50,000 a plate fundraiser , and say .
I will spend your money to go after people I know will support the president no matter what.
Haven’t heard that brought up yet.
All the media wants to do is talk 47% , and not look at the broader context of Romney’s extemporaneous comments.
They know that there are an increased # of people dependent, through non contribution, on the handouts ( of our money) that Obama promises, in the name of fairness.
Other frustration: Stop talking about a majority of the country, when the stat being used is 47%. Last time I checked a majority was 50% + 1....
No wonder they can’t fathom economics. They can’t even do simple math.
Really?
You think social security benefits arent taxable?
Social security benefits are taxable depending on the total amount of income you have from all sources.
Well stated and factual , based on my /wifes experience.
We in effect pay a tax on a tax because we happen to earn over the limit. 25,000 or 32,000 per below.
Source:
Do I have to pay income taxes on the benefits I receive?
You will have to pay federal taxes on your Social Security benefits if you file a federal tax return as an individual and your total income is more than $25,000. If you file a joint return, you will have to pay taxes if you and your spouse have a total income of more than $32,000.
Use the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Notice 703 shown on the back of the Social Security Benefit Statement, SSA Form 1099, to determine if any of your benefits may be taxable.
Social Security has no authority to withhold state or local taxes from your benefit. Many states and local authorities do not tax Social Security benefits. However, you should contact your state or local taxing authority for more information.
1. Is this out of character for Paul Ryan? (Yes)
+
2. Is this published by a push news outfit that doesn’t even try to hide it’s in the tank for Obama? (Yes)
=
It’s almost certainly taken way out of context.
” Does Romney pay Federal Income Taxes himself? I thought he pays the lower capital gains tax rates.”
I read at a financial site that Romney averaged 30% federal taxes, after deductions. He didn’t pay that 15% rate, because his income wasn’t sheltered in a fund.
