NEW YORKPresident Barack Obama is chiding Republican Mitt Romney for referring to supporters of the president as victims who depend on the government. Obama says anyone who wants to be president has to "work for everyone, not just for some."
Appearing on the "Late Show" with David Letterman, Obama offered his first comments to the Romney remarks that have roiled the Republican presidential nominee's campaign.

He has time for Jay Z, Beyonce and Letterman, but none for Netanyau or the families his Muslim Brotherhood. My God, I want this man gone!
that should read none for the families his Muslim Brotherhood murdered..
I didn’t know until today that Rommney made his comments in May. Shouldn’t someone ask why the Obamedia waited FOUR MONTHS to make them public? Clearly because they knew it would have been old news by now.
It was intentionally timed to cause maximum damage (but I don’t think it will have the affect they are hoping for). They thought this was really going to kill him and this late in the game he wouldn’t have enough time to recover.
For some of us Obama’s comments mean exactly squat.
Going on 3 1/2 years. That's a lot of squat.
Yeah, sure, Mr. ‘we won’. You are the most partisan ideologue to have ever held the presidency. You appointed a significant number of individuals with radical or at least questionable ideological backgrounds into positions as ‘czars’, without any process of vetting in front of the American public. You pushed through an incredibly partisan and unpopular bill that drastically alters health care in the US, and essentially lied to the American people about what it would mean to them and their relationship with their personal physician.
You asked a young woman to come to the DNC convention, Ms. Fluke, and attack all of those on the other side of the sensitive issue of what a Catholic institution should be ‘forced’ to fund. You could have intervened and prevented an enlisted man, a physician, from spending time in jail because he questioned your citizenship, on the basis of a missing birth certificate you could have easily provided (if you truly are telling the truth).
The list goes on and on. You are an ideological partisan hack, who has presided over one of the worst economic disasters in our national history - all in the name of your pathetically flawed and vituperative concept of ‘fairness’.
I wish you truly did believe you had a responsibility to be the President of all the US, and not just those who share your hurtful ideology.
carter 4.0 did Romney a huge favor. He put obama in the crosshairs instead of Romney and has, in fact, solidified the conservative base.
He did not say that he doesn't care about the "47%". What he said is that he didn't think they would ever vote for him, and he wasn't going to waste his time trying to convince them otherwise.
Romney's comments are being clipped to make it appear that he said something else.
Romney tells truth, RATS outraged.
The Letterman show!
A breath of fresh air!
How many “victims” of our public education system even recognize the concept of percentages? They’d probably sit up and take notice if their welfare check went up $47.00!! That “47” would get their attention.
Better yet, they’d surely know when their checks went down by $47.00.
Has anyone figured out what the 47% is?
Some claim it is based on not owing income tax, others say it is based on cashing a govt. check.
Romney said it was not paying income tax.
That number is based on IRS data.
It is fair to point out that some peoplle who don’t pay income taxes, or even cash a government check, are not freeloaders. But, if you listen to the entire thing in context, it is clear that Romney isn’t talking about them.
Article after article calls it about getting a government check.
Not owing income tax in a given year has nothing to do with how you vote.
The elderly, GIs, young marrieds, good ol boy right wingers, even rich people, many people don’t taxes every year, but they aren’t scum or receiving welfare or anything, they just don’t owe any taxes.
The income tax explanation is lame, so is the government check claim.
The statement was incredibly ignorant, clumsy, and clearly he hasn’t thought this through.
Article after article says that, because they are trying to put words in Romney’s mouth. Why do you think they are doing that?
There are multiple copies of the video. There are also complete transcripts. Listen or read the entire thing, and not just the excerpts others want you to hear.
Romney was talking about the culture of dependency on government: people that expected everything for free. It is his detractors that are trying to add in other groups that are not freeloading.
That would be receiving a government check and paid services from the government, like most of the conservative writers are interpreting it.
