The one guy with him was supposedly tracking down shoulder fired antiaircraft rockets, so it was probably more than a one day affair. If they were going to be in town for more than one day they would probably just stay there and sleep over, since there are no Holiday Inns to be had.

This article has the clearest presentation with numerous photos. It clarifies my misunderstanding regarding the consulate. It is, or rather was, a walled compound. With several buildings including a residence and having a “substantial security force”. And had been previously attacked.

As to the ‘second guy’ he’s been identified as the head of their IT section with 15 yrs in the USAF. So if he was tracking the floating MANPADS, that probably makes him an intel officer of some kind whose cover has/had been blown.

Odd that we would have two sizeable diplomatic missions in a country of 6.5 million.
