(09-12) 18:31 PDT PIEDMONT -- Anyone who talked to J. Christopher Stevens instantly became the center of his world.
Stevens, 52, the American ambassador to Libya killed during an attack by militants Tuesday in the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, was a natural diplomat, from his youth in Piedmont to his undergraduate years at UC Berkeley and studies at Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco, friends and colleagues said.
His violent death was doubly shocking, coming in a country in which he took a personal interest and whose revolution he had strived to help and understand, acquaintances said.
"Chris was one of those people who was very inclusive of everyone," said Amy Moorhead, whose older brother was a close friend of Stevens' in high school and college. "He was a people person. He was genuinely interested in me, even though I was younger. But it was not just me - he was genuinely interested in everybody.
"If he met someone, he wanted to know about them," Moorhead said.
Kept the human touch
Stevens grew up in a leafy, quiet neighborhood in Piedmont and kept a home in the East Bay hills enclave after being named U.S. ambassador to Libya in May.

Condolences to J. Christopher Stevens’ family and friends.
Too bad he never talked to me, if he paid all that attention, I would of saved his life in about five minutes.
He sounds like he might have been a Bay Area liberal. No amount of talking would have sufficed.
You be right on both counts, but remember, most of my posts are ultra high level snark, as that one was.
The point was that the kumbaya description of Stevens LISTENING to others is fiction.
Ironically, he was done in by an orchestrated betrayal nearly identical to the one he engineered for Qaddafi.
We all know what eventually happens to the useful idiots.
Yeah. Funny thing though, every useful idiot throughout history has had the exact same thought:
This time, it will be different!
Agreed PGalt! But if he had been given an ounce of education on human nature this obviously kind man would be alive today.
Prayers up for he and his loved ones.
This man must have been a classmate of my daughter’s. They would have been in the same class in Piedmont, quite a small town. I’m sure that they knew each other as both would have been in AP classes and in the arts. She certainly knew his friend, Austin Tichenor.
Those who fail to learn from history ... Just say no to Mooselims. Liberal PC ideas kill. Bomb the stone age bitter clingers back into the stone age they justly deserve.
Engineered for Hillary, who then very publically laughed about the murder and literally claimed responsibility for it.
Now he gets it the same way?
Is Hillary just cleaning up loose ends?
Yet again?
Maybe,, but I'm sure the Muslim Brotherhood is more skilled at deception than any Obama appointed incompetent, so they sat at the table with Stevens, and watched as he slid the knife into Qaddafi's back, then did the exact same thing to him under cover of phony movie insults.
