The family is deep south. From what I have read, the show producers pay them next to nothing for the privilege of filming and humiliating them. For this family, it probably means success.

I had a distant relative who married a young woman from Tennessee who grew up in a dirt floor home in a family where she was only one of two girls with six brothers. She was rough, she was not exactly the cleanest person I ever came into contact with, but she was one of the most honest, humorous, REAL people that I have had the pleasure to meet. Not into ALL of her humor (rough growing up with brothers and being one of them.. hunting and providing)... but she was genuine. Met her at a family reunion back in the 1970's... I remember she was really starstruck coming out to California.

You might be surprised to discover that Tennessee is NOT the deep South. In my household, we have hardwood and carpeted floors, granite counter tops and indoor plumbing. Oh yeah! a freezer that is not on the front porch, and that is filled with food that a man with multiple degrees from institutions of higher learning went out and HUNTED. I also lived in Southern California for 26 years and know what snobs that they can be. Before you jump me on my grammer I was educated in California schools.
