Paul Ryan exaggerates his marathon-running prowess
Los Angeles Times ^ | 09/01/2012 | James Rainey

Posted on 09/02/2012 12:49:04 AM PDT by HarleyD

Voters will have to decide how much to ding Republican vice presidential nominee Paul D. Ryan for slamming President Obama on a debt reduction commission, when Ryan made the same judgment himself with a vote in Congress.

That kind of inconsistency is easy to prove, if a bit arcane for some Americans. But there is nothing mysterious to the athletically-inclined about marathon times, so it will be interesting to see how the public reacts to Ryan carving a huge hunk out of his best time for the 26.2-mile race.

Maybe, I mean this is like the THIRD time this story has been posted in several hours. Some here would probably love to keep this sh*t going until the R&R campaign was broke and thrown off course in order to lose this election. See, it’s all about showing the GOP-e what’s what.

22 years ago!! Does your husband remember the time from 22 years ago to the tee? I don't even think Obama or the Times remembers that gas was $1.79 a gallon in December 2008 and now it is $4.22 a gallon.

Excellent point.

I went back to read more at Runner's World site. It looks like some of the xtra nastier comments have been pulled. I read through 3 pages of comments mostly from the runners themselves to see what they thought. Goodnight.

I wonder if he’s run into OJ, searching for the “real killers”?

I know, I know, that’s racist!

Seems like just yesterday when Bill Cosby turned heads playing tennis with Robert Culp on I Spy.

“Voters usually have some patience, but they can quickly become displeased with politicians whose prevarications become routine.”

Didn’t stop them voting in Obama/Biden

That is why obama plays so much golf...he is providing caddie jobs—and i’m sure he gives at least 50 cent tips..

My thoughts exactly! I cannot remember what happened two weeks ago, much less 22 years ago. As I understand it, this comment was made extemporaneously on a radio show. It was not part of a stump speech that gets repeated over and over (as Obama "misstatements" are).

Our congresswoman, Jean Schmidt of 2d Ohio, nearly was derailed by a claim about marathon running. As it turned out, she did have proof to back up her claim

In normal circumstances, one doesn’t forget one’s best time by an hour. A sub 3 hour versus a 4 hour marathon is a huge difference.

The thing that always baffles me about this is that a 9 minute pace over 26 miles is an accomplishment. Sure, it isn’t a world record or anything, but simply completing the race is what marathoning is about.

It was a dumb mistake on Ryan’s part if the details we’ve been provided are correct.

Ryan broke one of the cardinal rules for Republicans. Never play fast and loose with the truth at any level thinking you`re going to get the same break as a democrat. Obama has lied left and right about his background and the “media” never called him on it. As active partners of the dems, they`ll turn this into a major attack on Ryan`s credibility.

The double standard is unfair and it sucks but Repubs know that going in. Don`t fudge the facts.. on anything. The oppo researchers will call you on it.

This story's been hot on the Runners' World Beginners Forum for a day and a half now. Turned (of course) from a race discussion to a political discussion rather quickly. Naturally, the liberals started bashing Ryan and naturally, I stepped up and set the record straight.

It plays straight from the democrat party's latest mantra - that Ryan lies and can't be trusted. You saw it right after his speech when they tried to discredit his facts about the GM factory in his home town. And, of course, you saw the mainstream media spouting their latest talking points without even doing any REAL fact checking.

It's all part of the leftists' game. Commies at the DNC creat the latest news, the synchophants at the MSM broadcast it, and ignorant people believe it.

“...so it will be interesting to see how the public reacts to Ryan carving a huge hunk out of his best time for the 26.2-mile race.”

Time for a useful comparison. Ryan was what 20 years old when he ran that marathon and he has already corrected his error. I am betting that his error is not quite up there with Bidenopolis, the chain toting Slurpee man with the Indian accent story, and his tiny plagiarism scandal that caused him to withdraw from the 1988 Presidential campaign but who knows, this could be big as a peanut.

If Joe Biden made the same mistake, we’d be snickering too.

The only difference is that there are way more of them in the MSM. We’ll probably be hearing about this for a while.

Sigh.

Exactly. If he was an avid marathoner, it would be inexcusable - having done it so long ago and moving on to other things just shows he doesn't have an eidetic memory - either that or he was baiting Obama and using sports intimidation "boasting" as a hedge...

Let’s not forget John Kerry’s Boston Marathon experience.

He served in Viet Nam, ya know.

It took me sever minutes to remember what grade I was in 22 years ago

I think that was the year I won 3rd place in a foot race during Field Day...I think.
