I took some photography courses in college many years ago... I would have been kicked out for submitting something that was composed like that. I have accidentally taken photos of my feet that are better composed.

Unfortunately for the Times, the VAST majority of the readership is going to think it's either a failed "artistic" photo or a failed attempt to make some sort of comment. Likely both.
It's a failure, in any event.
