“They want to create “a better world”

Some are just misguided and probably have this motivation. Many, however, are driven by other factors, including:
1) Envy and the desire to bring down others.
2) Dependency on the system and a desire to keep freebies from the government flowing.
3) Racism - including those who want lax immigration policies to allow a rapid shift in demographics.
4) Women who for one reason or another resent men, and those who want to promote and continue policies that given them advantages over men.
5) Those who only look at the surface and truly believe that he’s a ‘reasonable’ nice guy with good intentions.

“They want to create “a better world”

"...they will try again. Maybe on another world, maybe on this very ground swept clean. A year from now, ten? They'll swing back to the belief that they can make people... better. And I do not hold to that." -- Capt. Malcolm Reynolds, main character of Joss Whedon's movie "Serenity".

As for the surface. I was impressed the 2004 convention speech. BUT the first speech I saw him give in 2007, did not show the same man. From the start, there are those cold eyes and outthrust chin that made him for me a repellant figure.
