The man has already admitted his mistake.

What more do Missourians ( especially those who changed their minds because of this gaffe ) want?
Let’s put it this way — you were inclined to vote for Akin until he made this stupid gaffe. Why were you inclined to vote for him? Maybe because you like his OVERALL ( emphasis ) stance on issues -— limited government, repealing Obamacare, fighting for a balanced budget, a flatter and more understandable tax code, etc.
Are you now going to vote for McCaskill who is AGAINST all these things that attracted you to Akin in the first place simply because he made one gaffe ( for which he apologized for )?
If the answer is ‘yes’, then that tells me about the kind of voter you are. You are after PERFECTION, or maybe STYLE more than substance.
In which case, you REALLY deserve McCaskill and Obamacare and a bankrupt country and all that goes with it.”

This discussion is way out of hand. I don’t know anything about Todd Akin, but I do know that he has spoken the unspeakable and the die is now cast for him. All this ballyhoo about Conservatives sticking with their guy is a load of crap. Akin is done! It does not matter now whether he’s “really a good guy or not.” He has suffered a fatal, self-inflicted wound and will not win against McCaskell. The fact that is the face of insurmountable evidence that he’s cooked his own goose, he’s staying in the race knowing full well he’s going to loose. We need to have the stomach to use every device to force him out. That’s what the RATS would do ( can you say Bob Torricelli?). If we are unwilling to play the game that way, then we deserve to be the minority party.

I am a conservative Missouri voter and you have our situation pegged as I see it. I don’t like it that we have to do everything we can to get Akin out, but if we want to WIN that is the situation.

Being a conservative Southern Baptist, I also resent Huckabee and Akin using Southern Baptist ministers to dig in on their position. Insinuating that I am un-Christian and pro-abortion because I want Akin out is not going to change my views.

The fact is that we cannot win on Republican votes alone. If Akin stays in, he loses.

“The fact that is the face of insurmountable evidence that he’s cooked his own goose, he’s staying in the race knowing full well he’s going to loose. We need to have the stomach to use every device to force him out.”

Mr. Akin is “comfortable in his conservatism”, so to speak. He will not leave the crusade voluntarily.

That leaves but two “devices” which might “force him out”.

One is a device that fires bullets. How did UBS finally get rid of Howard Beale in “Network”?

The other is something called money. Few men (or women) cannot “be bought”, IF “the price is right” (recall, for instance, the famous quip made by Winston Churchill with a woman over “the world’s oldest profession”).

Which device do you choose?
If you are unwilling to choose either, you lose, and Mr. Akin wins.

Aside: my guess is that by November, Mr. Akin will regain a considerable amount of support that has currently deserted him. Whether it will be enough to win, I can’t say. But given the reality that he is in ‘til the end, perhaps the only logical course of action is for the Pubbies to grant him “a probationary period” with which he re-establishes a modicum of credibility. If he can do this, then they’d better slip him some campaign cash and tactical support, even if it’s done quietly...
