A new Missouri poll indicates Rep. Todd Akin’s rape remarks have not hurt Mitt Romney in Missouri, but the comments about “legitimate rape” and the controversy that ensued have damaged Akin, especially among women voters.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch poll found Akin, who had been leading McCaskill by five points and was tied with the Democrat among women voters before his remarks, now trails McCaskill by 9 points overall and by 18 points with women voters.
Democrats have tried to tie Akin’s comments to Romney, but the poll found Romney still leads President Barack Obama in Missouri by 7 points, 50-43.
These numbers come out after Akin vowed to stay in the race at a press conference on Friday. The deadline for Akin to withdraw was last Tuesday. Akin had until September 25 to petition for a court order to remove his name off the ballot, which would allow the Missouri GOP to select a replacement candidate. Akin's is a race Republicans must win to get control of the Senate and, until now, was assumed to be a shoo-in. McCaskill is still viewed more unfavorably than she is favorably in the poll.

Why? Why do Missouri voters have to vote for a conservative gaffe machine ala Joe Biden, especially when Akin can do the right thing, and resign before September 25.
Just because democrats stick by their gaffe machines, why are you suggesting that conservatives follow the liberal path in such situations.

In the spring, I donated $25 to Richard Mourdock. I was glad to see him win.
Deb Fischer (in Nebraska) is in good shape. A recent poll had her with a 16-point lead. Ted Cruz is likely safe too.
But your point is correct. These other candidates can use our support now.
I’m not sure where my next check is going. Here in Minnesota, we’re trying to keep GOP control of the state legislature in the face of a large-spending onslaught by the libs. I’ll be writing some checks for our legislative candidates - but I’ll later send a check to a couple of the names you gave out.
Good morning. It may not have carried over in Missouri, but I do worry about what it has done nationally. NARAL and PLANNED PARENTHOOD are all over it and using it for fundraising.

The War on Women was totally contrived. In perception for women and independents, Akin made it real. Had he gone away already, the impact would have been lessened. He has done damage to the pro-life cause.

RE: Akin had the opportunity to reiterate that he stood for the sanctity of viable life in the womb no matter what. But instead, he chose to deny the possibility that such life could even exist.
The man has already admitted his mistake.
What more do Missourians ( especially those who changed their minds because of this gaffe ) want?
Let’s put it this way — you were inclined to vote for Akin until he made this stupid gaffe. Why were you inclined to vote for him? Maybe because you like his OVERALL ( emphasis ) stance on issues -— limited government, repealing Obamacare, fighting for a balanced budget, a flatter and more understandable tax code, etc.
Akin’s stance on these issues have not changed one bit even with his above gaffe ( and yes, he’s still pro-life).
Are you now going to vote for McCaskill who is AGAINST all these things that attracted you to Akin in the first place simply because he made one gaffe ( for which he apologized for )?
If the answer is ‘yes’, then that tells me about the kind of voter you are. You are after PERFECTION, or maybe STYLE more than substance.
In which case, you REALLY deserve McCaskill and Obamacare and a bankrupt country and all that goes with it.

Let’s say Akin stays. What then? Are conservatives who were turned off by what he says then going to NOT vote for him in November and let McCaskill ( who is pro-choice and earned 100-percent score in NARAL ) just cruise?
I am not from Missouri, but I sure as hell will STILL vote for Akin, warts and all, if I lived there, over the alternative.
IN THE OVERALL SCHEME OF THINGS, FOR CONSERVATIVES, THAT GAFFE SHOULD BE NO BIG DEAL.
Akin is pro-life, McCaskill is pro-choice. That should settle it for the conservative Missourian.

Whether it works or not (for the liberals) remains to be seen. But the truth is that we’d have been a lot better off if Akin had not spoken his mind.
It may come as a surprise to outsiders but Missourians are big into following the rules of the electoral process and not circumventing them just to win a seat.

You know, instead of continuing with your anti-Republican jihad, why don’t you do something productive. Go back to my original post where I listed a number of conservative Republican Senate candidates you can support.
I’m like the majority of conservatives—I wish that Akin would come to his senses and withdraw and allow a better candidate to take his place. If he doesn’t, residents in Missouri can:
1.vote for him
2.not vote in the Senate race, or
3.vote for McCaskill
I’d encourage the first option. But for those Missouri residents (of which you are not one) who can’t bring themselves to support Akin, I’m suggesting some other conservative Senate candidates in other states to which they can lend support.
The above is the (as you categorize it for some strange reason) “liberal path” that I recommend. I happen to think that it is the conservative path. I think that the path YOU ARE ON is the liberal path—you and your relentless jihad (look at your posting history) against a Republican Senate candidate.

Again, Akin LEAVING and allowing another conservative to run is the IDEAL scenario.
But what should a conservative do if he does not leave?
We do not always have perfect choices in life. Oftentimes, we have IMPERFECT choices and we have to choose the lesser of the evils.
So, the choice if Akin refuses to leave is to stay home and let McCaskill cruise?
Yep, that sounds very much like a lot of FReepers who say that they’ll stay home if Romney is the GOP candidate because of Romneycare.
Let Obama and McCaskill win — that’s the solution.
Many or most conservatives may well come back and vote for him. Some will stay home. But he has lost independents. Political Reality 101 -— you do not win without attracting independents. And money.
My opinion he gave the seat to McCaskill.
Akin could have been more apologetic and humble, but what does he do, he flys off to Florida for a few days, to hear an echo chamber to stay in.
This a perfect storm for what conservatives should not do.
Akin has proven that this race is all about him, and he only.
The more he fixates about himself, the more bad taste he leaves with voters, and the voters again have the choice of two arrogant people running for Senate, and the principle of voting for the devil you do know starts to apply.

I wish more folks had your good attitude. There are an abundance of good candidates we can support at the state, local & federal levels. We need to focus our attention and resources to where they can be most productive.
