I look back to July 21 1969 and sometimes think I saw the apex of the USA. Terrible to contemplate that perhaps at the age of 14 I saw my nation at its zenith and we have been slowly slipping downhill since.
We seem to be a nation that now reaches toward mediocrity if it even bothers to reach at all!
We exist totally off the accomplishments of the past!
I’m much younger than you, and agree. I was born a couple generations after you and used to say I was born 40 years too late.
Excellent observation.
I remember as a kid folks saying things like “We can send a man to the moon...” and bewail that no money was being spent for X, Y, or Z.
Now we spend money we don’t have for X, Y, and Z by the truckload, have stopped sending men higher than cruising altitude, and I can’t think of a single problem that’s been solved by it.
I’m with you, FRiend. I turned 14 a few months afterward. I remember VIVIDLY....watching those astonishing black-and-white television images from the moon; watching Neil, then Buzz, hop off that ladder onto the lunar surface.
It set the course of my life for many, many years to come.
RIP, sir. You lifted the spirits and hearts of all mankind. May God welcome you Home.
