ST. LOUIS, August 23, 2012, (LifeSiteNews.com) Now that Todd Akin has said he will be staying in the race for Missouris U.S. Senate seat, senior pro-life and conservative leaders including Phyllis Schlafly, Gary Bauer, and others are telling the Republican Party establishment to back off its over-the-top campaign to have him step aside. Phyllis Schlafly, Eagle Forum founder, supports Todd Akin. Phyllis Schlafly, Eagle Forum founder, supports Todd Akin.
Phyllis Schlafly, who emerged on the conservative scene with her 1964 book A Choice Not an Echo, rapped party elites for disenfranchising their own voters. I dont think people like that should make the decision, she said. The people of Missouri should make that decision.
Both national pro-family leaders and local grassroots conservative leadership are confused and offended by national party leaders such as Karl Rove, RNC Chairman Reince Priebus, and Charles Krauthammer, who have vowed to cut funds from Akins candidacy or pushed him to withdraw from the race.
Columnist Ann Coulter has suggested Republicans stage a write-in candidacy for former Governor Kit Bond.
The on-going parade of public denunciations by various GOP leaders is over-the-top and counterproductive, said Gary Bauer, a former presidential candidate and leader of the Campaign for Working Families, in a statement e-mailed to LifeSiteNews.com, Some of their public attacks on Akin have been more aggressive than anything some of these leaders have ever said about Barack Obama and his truly radical rejection of the sanctity of human life and his promotion of abortion-on-demand paid for by the taxpayer!

Ryan Bomberger of the Radiance Foundation had a personal stake in the issue. The child of rape, he said, Quite frankly, Im glad such a pro-family, pro-life stalwart, despite a few bumps and lots of scrapes, is not quitting under pressure from hypocritical pro-abortion radicals and spineless Republicans.
Iowa Congressman Steve King, who faced his own media feeding frenzy over abortion remarks taken out of context this week, was as blunt, stating that George Soros-funded media are now dictating the response of leading Republicans.
The Show Me states conservative leaders have flocked to Akins side, as well.
John Putnam, Missouri state coordinator for the Tea Party Patriots, said the national party should be circling the wagons around their candidate, not condemning him.
Akin won his races with a family-fueled campaign that defied the states Republican establishment. That has led local media to conclude he owes them nothing.
If he loses the race, the Republican Party will not take back control of the U.S. Senate. But pro-family leaders say if the Republicans replace Akin, they will almost certainly lose the race.
After allegations of sexual indiscretions in sealed divorce records, which were leaked to the media, Republican leaders pressured Jack Ryan to withdraw from the 2004 Illinois Senate race, said Vision America Action President Dr. Rick Scarborough. Thats how we ended up with Barack Obama in the White Housea steep price to pay for Republican squeamishness.
Missouri voters who gave Akin the GOP Senate nomination are wise enough to decide who theyd prefer to send to Washington, ultra-liberal Clair McCaskill or a decent man and an authentic conservative who misspoke, he said.
Many see the tempest-in-a-tea-party as little more than an attempt to marginalize pro-life voices within the Republican Party. Judie Brown of the American Life League wrote, This is really not about Akin at all; it is about the red herring that pro-abortion forces have used for years to define genuine pro-life apologists as zealots, fanatics and unrealistic Pollyannas.
Despite Akins remarks, Public Policy Polling, a Democrat-leaning firm, found him polling one point ahead of Democratic incumbent Senator Claire McCaskill, 44-43. GOP voters dislike McCaskill so much theyre not going to vote for her no matter what their nominee does, the firm found. Independent voters havent moved at all either.
Putnam said from his perspective, the only way Akin can prevail is if the pro-life community gets behind him and makes this a national campaign.
Yeah, and I think Missouri just MIGHT lean Republican in its total voter count. Conventional wisdom has become conventional idiocy when it comes to analyzing polls here. Having exactly 50% Democrats and 50% Republicans in a poll is NOT the definition of an accurate poll.
“So should Romney withdraw too?”
Yes, if Romney had indicated that women were routinely using rape as a means of acquiring an abortion, then yes, he would have to step aside.
That is a legit question that you have yet to answer.
If you TRULY believe it is murder, than if you do not punish those who commit it, YOU ARE a hypocrite. I just wonder how you intend to punish them.
Abortion is MURDER. Murderers should be put on trial for murder. I realize that leftists such as yourself relish nuance, but many things really are as simple as they seem.
My pro-life views are hardly a secret. I'm quite sure that if you ask the others at any of the other leftist/anti-FReeper online cesspools you frequent they will tell you all about me.
Webster has about five definition for legitimate. One is actual. In that context he would be talking violent as opposed to statutory.
how do u defend Romney’s support of gay boy scout organization?
Police investigating reported threat against Akin
Not too bright, though.
“Having exactly 50% Democrats and 50% Republicans in a poll is NOT the definition of an accurate poll.”
Look, Rasmussen has him down by 10 in less than a week, at 38% and McCaskill hasn’t even started her negative campaign against him.
For all you Akin supporters out there tell me where is Akin going to make up 12 percentage points to win this election?
If you think Mo is made up of 50% conservative voters, and all that is needed is for all good conservatives to get behind him and he will reach 50% you are delusional.
If he is still at 38%, he does have the great majority of the conservative vote already with him.
So tell me where is he going to make up the difference?
Anyone? Any answers?
I favor the death penalty for abortionists. I favor the death penalty for rapists.
I also oppose embryonic stem cell research, and think the First Amendment requires the government to provide each member of the militia with a weapon comparable to standard issue military equipment, and that would be up to and including tracked vehicles, artillery, drones, fighter bombers, and whatever else a military might need. (At the same time I think hunting wild game should be restricted to shotguns and shotgun slugs), and I am opposed to any increases in taxation and spending.
If i Were a U.S. Representative, I"d beat his petty little 96% ACU rating every time. BTW, the NRA would fear me. They do not defend arming the populace with the big guns.
Now, tell me, why should I buy into this clowns BS when it comes to accepting Democrat party help to run against real Conservatives?
You people are glossing right over that part.
Who do you claim did say that women were routinely using rape as a means of acquiring an abortion?
Good question ~ obviously the RNC should drop Romney right now for defending insertion of gays into Boy Scouts.
From your link:
Each year in the US, 10,00015,000 abortions occur among women whose pregnancies are a result of reported rape or incest
Whose pregnancies are a result of reported rape or incest. Reported by whom? The women? Are their statements cross-checked with police reports, or do they just answer 'yes' to the question in order to get what they want?
No, I am not 'ignorant of the facts', I just choose to come to a conclusion based on facts, not just listen to a single organizations word on the issue
Just like a great man once said, trust but verify. Of all people, Reagan69, you should know that.
Sure I did. Probability went down from 3-5% to 2-4%. That’s a 25-33% drop.
“Police investigating reported threat against Akin”
Playing the victim is the sign of a desperate man.
Doesn't he have advisors?
You want to run for Senate there are people you stay away from!
Much appreciated. Decorum seems to be a lost art here sometimes!
;-)
Ya know guys, if Akin’s 1/2 the man I believe him to be, God isn’t going to let Akin’s mouth get between him and a Senate seat!!Especially given the present opponent.
“For all you Akin supporters out there tell me where is Akin going to make up 12 percentage points to win this election?”
How’s it feel to be a useful idiot?? So far, I’ve seen you assist the media in blowing this man’s comments WAY out of proportion, stuffing words in his mouth that he actually didn’t say.
If you’re so worried about how Akin is going to make up the 12%, then I suggest you stop actively campaigning against him. I suspect, though, that that will never happen because you are a pro-abort troll.
“Who do you claim did say that women were routinely using rape as a means of acquiring an abortion?”
akin used the word legitimate rape, meaning there must be a category of illegitimate rape.
So it is up to you to defend illegitimate rape.
I will agree with you there. He fell for the famous liberal trap: the abortion exception.
