Another Missouri Republican consultant suggests that Representative Jo Ann Emerson, the Republican who has represented Missouris eighth district since 1996, could be a top contender to replace Todd Akin if he quits. Her name has been making the rounds among party insiders, thanks in part to the fact that shes currently the longest-serving House member in Missouri. Missouri GOP executive director Lloyd Smith used to be her chief-of-staff.
UPDATE: A colleague points out that Emerson is a member of the moderate-leaning Republican Main Street partnership, and generally less rightward than the three Akin, Sarah Steelman, and John Brunner who ran in the primary. Emersons American Conservative Union ranking for 2011 was 56, and for 2010 88; Akins ratings, in contrast, were 91.67 and 100 in those years respectively.
“I have a problem with the overreaction to Akin’s initial statement during the gotcha interview”
This was not a gotcha interview (watch it). It was a straight forward question concerning abortion and rape.
His first response was that legitimate rape results in very few pregnancies. So he was laying the foundation to support his next statement that if it was a “true” (legitimate) rape, the female body would shut down the reproductive system resulting in very very few pregnancies.
So first he stated his beliefs about real, true rapes, and then supports his contentions with his version of facts.
He was eager to express those views, so don’t say he was ambushed.
Do you think that MO will go for Obama and McCaskill? Or will there be enough split tickets to choose Romney and McCaskill? In other words, how dumb are the voters who will change their votes to reelect someone who will do them further harm? If they choose McCaskill and Obama, I think they get the government they deserve. The same goes for the national elections.
Akin will step down in a few weeks.
1. Lack of money, some donors are asking for their donations be returned. Rep senate committee cut off funds. Sate GOP will not help.
2. You cant run a campaign without money and this will evidently sink in to Akin.
3. Who will campaign with him? He is toxic in Mo no other Rep running will stand with him.
4. Who will help him organize his campaign? The state and county GOP organizations will not want to be associated and tainted by being associated with him. He cant do this on his own. See 1,2and 3 above. He is isolated and alone in this state and that will eventually sink in.
5. On Tuesday night, he was the next senator from Mo. A few days later it was pulled from underneath him. He will need a few weeks to let that wound heal, but he will eventually realize his position.
6. He has his political reputation and legacy to consider. If he doesnt step down and he loses, he will be the most despised politician in the state. If steps down in a dignified manner to help his party, he will leave with some sense of respect.
7. The Democratic convention will start in 2 weeks, he will not want to see and hear his name dragged through the mud every night on national TV.
What counts is how many Republican Party senators we have in the Senate. Once we got control, this woman can vote for the man in the moon.
Controlling the Senate means controlling appropriations, the Judiciary (nominations), and Foreign Relations Committee.
The key to rebuilding America.
I’d take a dead cat over McCaskill, the liberal shithead.
“Id take a dead cat over McCaskill, the liberal shithead.”
My sentiments exactly.
LOL. Watch C-SPAN and you will see such idiocy on display routinely. McCaskill is a dim bulb. Akin will do well in his debates with her. Let her defend her vote on Obamacare and explain how it will save Medicare and have no ill effect on seniors. Say IPAB. here will be a clear choice for the voters. 71% of Missouri voters want Obamacare repealed.
Are you saying that Missouri voters want someone reelected who supported Obamacare and doesn’t want it repealed? Someone who supports Obama’s economic policies? If that is the case, then not only will McCaskill win, so will Obama.
I was just glad to see the CBS Evening News at least did not even mention Akin once. Maybe the story is going away slightly on the national level, but I still think Akin is dead in MO.
The race will not hinge on whether Akin should have used the word forcible rather than legitimate. It will turn on what direction the people of Missouri want their government to go and what they want for their children's future.
This little gaff will run it's course and the course for something like this is about 2 to 3 weeks.
But you'd rather abort Akin. Are you in favor of aborting children so quickly?
“Akin will do well in his debates with her”
I don’t think he will remain on the ticket long enough for a debate. I feel once the reality of the situation has time to sink in he will withdraw.
Since you HATE him so much, do you plan on killing him?
“Since you HATE him so much, do you plan on killing him?”
No need, he just shot himself in the head, apparently a self inflicted wound. Autopsy to follow.
LOL. Yeah just your average interview on rape and abortion. Do you think that possibly this was a setup since Paul Ryan co-sponsored a bill with Akin on abortion funding for rape? Remember the question by Stephy to Romney on contraceptives? All of this is just a coincidence.
The Dems are out to get the Reps who are against abortion even in the case of rape and incest. It is part of their "War Against Women" narrative. The MSM is now in the process of seeking out Rep candidates across the country to nail them on the issue.
Here is an example of what is happening in the Washington state senate race
The reporters already know the Rep views. They are just trying to find a phrase or sentence that they can use against the candidate. They edit the stuff to death. I have had been interviewed many times by the media. You can have a 30 minute interview and have only 30 seconds used. The Akin interview was a set up and Akin fell into the trap. Katie Couric nailed Palin. For the reporters, this is a chance for fame and awards. And they don't treat Dems like they treat Reps.
All may be true in terms of the way the GOP establishment has crucified him, but I sense that this guy has a lot of character and is a man of principle. He really has nothing to lose at this point. And I wouldn’t discount grassroots support nationally. America loves the underdog and the guy fighting the system. He has served the people of MO for 24 years. They know him.
Believe it or not there are some in her District who swear they will not ever vote for Emerson again. Personally, I haven’t voted for her since 2006, I just leave that part of the ballot blank. I don’t know what I’d do if she is the chosen one.
You and Akin may be the last 2 humans on the planet who haven't figured this out...
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH - Claire McCaskill's political strategy paying off
“And I wouldnt discount grassroots support nationally. America loves the underdog and the guy fighting the system. He has served the people of MO for 24 years. They know him.”
I heard a report this morning, and they said he has raised $7000.00 since this broke.
In a race that will require millions he is getting pennies. He can’t reasonably expect to stay in much longer, his staff will begin to leave.
“LOL. Yeah just your average interview on rape and abortion. Do you think that possibly this was a setup since Paul Ryan co-sponsored a bill with Akin on abortion funding for rape?”
Obviously you haven’t watched the interview. It was handled by a local news person who used to do human interests stories.
Sorry no liberal/Dem conspiracy here.
