(CBS/AP) Rep. Todd Akin defied the nation's top Republicans Tuesday and forged ahead with his besieged Senate bid, declaring the party was overreacting to his comments that women's bodies can prevent pregnancies in cases of "legitimate rape" and by insisting he abandon his campaign.
Akin pledged to carry on with his quest to unseat Democrat Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri. But his bid faced tall obstacles: a lack of money, a lack of party support and no assurance that his apologies would be enough to heal a self-inflicted political wound.

But, says Andrews, "Two sources tell CBS News Aken's real strategy here is to hang tough -- for now -- and see if that wins enough money and support to stay in the race. In others words-- his final decision to stay in--may not be final."

If you listen to his whole statement, you will hear a couple of things:
1) The "legitimate" rape comment was a preface to his main point . I believe he is referring to what I describe in my #71 post above, which he said he had heard from a few doctors.
2) His main point is that the baby should not have to suffer and die for the sin of another. That, by the way, is a plank in the Republican party platform and has been for years. Now, you may believe that the murder of an innocent child is justified in the case of rape but there are a lot of people who are far from stupid who believe such murder is extremely offensive.
I was offended BEFORE the media told anyone to be offended.
I still am. Their coverage has no bearing on how I view this.
I also think this man is extremely stupid. He may be a good man, but even good people can be STUPID. We don’t need more stupid in Congress and that is undebatable.
Do you want 0bamacare stopped? Check yes or no.
Agreed.
Akins is the candidate and he can win this election which is 3 months away.
We need to stop yapping about something that he has already apologized for.
Yea Pete nice try. I never in any way said, hinted at or in any way suggested that abortion was okay so no need to try and toss that paint brush around. Want to try again?
Sure. Why don't you tell me what part was offensive and what part was stupid? Before you do, you may want to read my post #71 to see what he was really talking about.
Akin is still better than McCaskill by a yards, and if he loses the election, or it drastically hurts the ticket across the board, then the fault lays with the GOP, the NRSC and the likes, along with people on the right who will continue to deride him.
Can we really take a news story seriously, when it can't even get the name of the person they are talking about correct?

You are alone in supporting abortion and the homosexual agenda, freak.
Let us hear how you want to defend your position on those issues.
Claire McCaskill is hated and will not win MO.
Todd Akin has been a consistent and reliable conservative. One reason why he is not liked by a moderate GOP Establishment.
Despite that, its hard to swim against a tsunami. He won’t make it through this, folks. So, remember the name Ann Wagner.
Seems like the definition of establishment changes with the wind. I swear that it wasn’t until today that Allen West and Sarah Palin were lumped in with the establishment. Let’s be honest here Pete. Damned near everyone has said that Akin should withdraw, including several figures that you can’t legitimately call establishment republicans.
He screwed up, badly and it’s cost him. That’s that, end of story.
That was what I found particularly vile. It reminded me of some backwoods snake handler types (though in fairness they didn’t handle snakes) we lived near in East Texas. If you got sick, and God didn’t send healing, then it was your fault because your faith was weak.
No, not in the context of this discussion it is not. This will be the first time ever that rape is not exempted in the Republican party platform. A huge mistake in my opinion.
I'll even predict right now that in very short order, more people will recognize the mistake. The Democrats have already latched on to it and dubbed it the Akin Plank. There is a ton of political mileage to be gained from this, and you'd better bet that the democrats will milk it for every vote that it's worth.
He said as much when interviewed by Hannity: he’ll watch the polls next month and decide if he wants to get out in time for the late September deadline.
A You have misstated what I said. In my post #14 I said "Conservative pundits" and identified them separately from the Republican establishment. Then again in post #79 I said "Conservatives I respected" and again differentiated from the Republican establishment.
Are you even reading what I wrote?
You are just wrong. An exception for rape was not in the party platform 4 or 8 years ago.
I am used to disinformation from the left but, frankly, I am shocked at the amount of disinformation coming from conservatives, to harm one of their own no less.
Any credible candidate who wouldn't shoot his mouth off and say something STUPID would beat her big.
