There'ss no point in re-committing the money unless Akin can prove that he can overcome his self-made problems and run a competitive race.
Given the level of intelligence and political acumen he's demonstrated thus far, I don't see it happening.
The Missouri seat is likely gone...
Under what rationale would the Republican Party in MO replace him? They just can’t willy nilly overturn the results of an election.
That's for sure. It was awful.
I can see why Claire spend millions helping him win the primary and HE LET HER .
Under the circumstances, if he really cared about the pro-life cause as much as he claims to (and about our nation's future) he would have put his personal ambition aside. He comes off as someone lacking humility yet firmly believing they're on some higher mission. A fraud.
But apparently the country is stuck with him. Another hold-your-nose-and-vote candidate.
I’m usually a Palin fan, but why doesn’t SHE run as a 3rd party candidate.
What’s her role these days, besides cheerleader.
It wasn’t even a study, that’s the old Willke snake oil writings that some pro-lifers still spout even though it has been incredibly discredited. Any responsible politician won’t be spreading that nonsense when medical science has completely disavowed it.
Not sure what Akin was thinking but his awkward rambling on Hannity earlier today only made it far worse.
The GOP aren’t the one’s making it a national issue. I’ve turned on CNN and MSNBC 4 times today, that is ALL they are talking about. Akin gave the Dems a freebie and they are going to run with it and milk it for every last drop they can get.
Someone needs to offer him a million bucks and a lobbyist position. Bet that would change his mind.
He rambled about being “called by God.” I doubt money, or anything else, will get him out.
I was going to say the same thing.
It's not over yet. Akin can still read the tea leaves and decide to drop out, but now it will take a court filing.
We can't let people forget this, that there are still options.
So, we have to start talking up the courts, just in case. We cannot allow a liberal judge to force Akin to remain on the ballot if Akin chooses later to withdraw. That would be judicial activism of a nature way beyond the Torricelli/Lautenberg ruling.
With Torricelli, Democrats argued that the voters of New Jersey deserved a competitive election, and therefore the courts must allow Torricelli to be replaced with another candidate. Ironically, they argued this simultaneously with arguing in Hawaii that the recently deceased Patsy Mink should remain on the ballot in the name of fairness, and any votes for her should count for her replacement.
Sympathetic courts sided with the Democrats in both cases, voting to toss the Torch and keep the late Mink.
And let's not even talk about the Mel Carnahan disaster here in Missouri. The reason the courts didn't intervene is that John Ashcroft was too much of a gentleman to contest the legitimacy of running against a dead candidate who had the governor's promise to name his wife in his place if he won. Properly, votes for Carnahan should not have counted at all, but Rules For Democrats trump the rules for the rest of us, it seems.
So, what would they do in Missouri if Akin decides to drop out later? Will they force him to remain despite other courts allowing the deceased to remain in Hawaii and Missouri, and the loser to be replaced in New Jersey?

Hide speakers in the walls of his home??? :P
... and if everybody piles on and manages to run him out of the race, they’ll stop? The damage is done, whatever that may be. Don’t compound it.
He needs to be called by Lifepac or some group like that.
Regardless of the science “facts” Akin tried and failed to present, is. . .we are pro-life in ALL circumstances or not.
Pro life is pro life. Rape, incest, no matter, the child is innocent and does not deserve the death penalty.
And our “ethics” say he must step down?
I’m more ashamed of pro-lifers than I am of Akin.
Maybe his science is wrong, but his heart is right.
Now you'll never be able to run for the Senate.
“Big OOPS there....should have been ... much less than the chance of pregancy from consensual sex”
You should be banned from FR forever for this mistake.
And that's the rub isn't it? Noone is upset because Akin is so pro-life that he tries to defend this position in all circumstance - factually wrong or right - he's a no-go because, now, the libs get to "milk it".
And that's what's pissing everyone off.
So Akin is wrong on a fact. This is not the first time its happened, and it won't be the last.
But, but, but . .. OUR CANDIDATES are supposed to be perfect! Yes, that's it - make one little comment that makes us look bad, so we abandon you.
I have news for all of you who worry about the libs milking a mistake: The libs are gonna milk any tit in their sight. Fall for it. They know you will. So do it.
Yes...the GOP needs to commit itself to Pro-Life
Unfortunately they are not...and this is the real reason they are calling for Akin to drop out.
Akin is demonstrating some real leadership by telling the GOP RINO establishment...and all the PhonyCons in GOP Media...to go procreate with themselves...Akin is stayin’
Not quite.
But they are supposed to be able to articulate their position on fundamental elements of our platform.
Not necessarily effectively. But at least coherently.
Akin, unfortunately, proved greivously unequal to the task.
Akin failed to articulate, but he is obviously pro-life.
He failed. He failed us, the pro-life cause, he set us back years in our struggle.
Gee, I sure wish crusifiction was still legal.
Heck, back in 1492, if Akin had said something that wasn't factual, I'd have his damn head in a sling! Country be damned! Ethics be damned! We have our principles to defend!
How the hell is Akin going to win this seat? He’ll have NO financial support from the GOP. Is he filthy rich? His opponent will have unlimited funds pour into her campaign now. Watch for 24/7 DNC ads in MO, and everywhere else to boot.
Akin will follow foot-steps of:
Joe Miller in AK
Hoffman in NY-23
Sharron Angle in NV
Christine O’Donell in DE
Buck in CO
JD Hayworth in AZ
George Allen in VA
All were solid pro-lifers. All were solid conservatives.
But that is not why they all lost. They lost because they
were lousy politicians. Akin is a lousy politician.
Akin opined that women victims of rape almost never get pregnant (paraphrasing). That is gaffe #1. There will be
half a dozen more for McCaskill & the liberals to exploit.
I know exactly why Akin is staying in the race. His hired advisers told him to. They want to keep getting paid. If he drops out, they are all out of a job. Akin is just an egotistical, dumb azz politician and a fool. After he loses in November he will be branded for life as the man who made Obamacare permanent and helped Obama finish his dreams from his father. MO is critical for Romney to win White House. With Akin as the flag bearer, GOP turnout will be down and that helps Obama.
