Rep. Todd Akin, the embattled Senate candidate who used the phrase “legitimate rape” in talking about abortion and pregnancy, said Tuesday afternoon that he would stick to his decision to remain in the race.

So far, McCaskill hasn't fired one shot at Akin. In fact, she's working hard to prop him up.

The storm isn't going to blow over...it hasn't even begun. You can bet the McCaskill campaign has a trunk full of Akinisms that they will use all the way until election day...saving the best for last.

This guy is a momentum black hole.

The $2 million Claire McCaskill spent on pushing this dimwit across the finish line in the primaries was the most effective $2 million any candidate has ever spent.

Expect this to become a more frequent Dem strategy, picking out the dumbest Republican candidate, the one least able to stand up to scrutiny and most likely to make of fool of themselves and supporting them financially through the primaries.

This just shows the one issue voters would rather have a martyr to the cause than an electable candidate who would be a million times better for the unborn than McCaskill.

There is a real simple solution to all this. Akin steps aside and is replaced with a woman candidate. This issue would go away in a week. If he selfishly stays in this goes national and every GOP candidate will be carpet bombed with Akin’s comments until November.

There were 3 candidates in the Senate primary, and all 3 were beating McCaskill handily in head-to-head competitions, yes? This guy should step aside and let someone with a filter between their brain and mouth step in.

“The winning act is to go on the attack quickly and that’s what I think he’ll do.”

Really? Because as of today he’s on TV saying: I know rape is very bad.

His stupid remark is not the only thing HE can talk about.

He’s toast, he’s too stupid to get his own foot out of his mouth, he won’t be able to get away from this remark, not for the rest of his political life. Which, if it survives the next few hours, might last until November. But I’ll be pretty surprised if it makes it past that.

There really is no way to force him out. He did win an election. If Claire ran ads for him, if it was snowy that day, if he tricked everyone, if his opponent got caught with a live boy or a dead woman. All that matters is the numbers. There really is no system for a party to force someone out that won that im aware of.

BUT, they can repudiate this dimwit and utterly disavow him and promise to marginalize him in every way they can. NO committes, his legislation gets nowhere, no cash, no assistance,,etc.

He is clearly too uneducated for the job, and is our version of Shiela Jackson Lee. She is a blathering idiot, but has the right skin color and mentality for her district. Akin is a divinity student who is great on abortion, but is otherwise a dim bulb. He is surfing that prolife position.

It would be better to have a prolifer with intelligence and accomplishments.

that you’re not counting on is that a man who said something SO stupid, won’t say something equally stupid that will further hurt himself and the GOP.

It’s what stupid people do, stupidity is a habit, not a one-time isolated event and Akin is about as dumb as they come.

I don't always buy that silly meme. You certianly do let the media and Dems do your thinking. You want to change the thinking among the electorate? You don't fold over a dumb remark after the candidate has apologized, and let the enemy Dems set the agenda. If Akins left the Senate race the Dims would are still going to use his remark against the Rs. And Missouri is not O’Donnell's Delaware. The Missouri Senate election depends how Akin from here on out runs his campaign.

Here's a real bad habit. Repubs don't really know how to win but they certianly know how to lose. You guys are fragile porcelain always getting and looking to be broken.

This. McCaskill has yet to start campaigning against this clown and he’s only up by a couple points.

Soon enough she’s going to unload both barrels into him hard and fast, and by the time the smoke clears, Akin won’t know what him, he’ll be down by double-digits and the same fools backing him now will still be saying “he’ll do it, he’ll turn it around, he’s a good Pro-life conservative after all, just like Sharron Angle and Ken Buck.”

“which increases the risk of miscarriage. “

Come on, now, don't take snippets of what I said.

A pregnant woman under stress, and having a baby from an act of rape has to be (I'm not a woman so that's opinion) stressful on a woman, produces higher levels of cortisol which increases the risk of miscarriage.

You do understand that pregnancy generally comes before a miscarriage...
Why, yes, I do.
See that first part? A pregnant woman under stress...
Pregnancy before miscarriage.

...or how do things work in your world?

Nice try. Try again.

"It’s either that or the party goes to court tomorrow to try and dislodge him against his will. But I’m not sure they would even have standing to do that."

There might be another way, but the Dems and Obama are so much better at it. Akin has been in politics a long time. The party should know where the bodies are buried. He could be approached and told he has until 5pm to withdraw or be hauled off in handcuffs (assuming there is anything to use).

If Akin stays in the race and the GOP denies him the usual funding and resources then it will be THEIR fault if the seat is lost. I’d like to know just what cause they’re fighting for that makes it worth losing the Senate over.

If only there was someone who fit this bill and has a Tea Party-backed favorite in the primary...

If he runs and the GOP wants to contest the seat, the GOP will get back behind him.

In other words, before too long, it will be, for Missouri voters:

ABM = Anyone But McCaskill

Akin does need to learn how to express himself more gracefully, particularly when it comes to extremely sensitive issues like rape and abortion. There is nothing wrong with his opposing all abortions (including those incident to rape), but he has no business using the words "legitimate" and "rape" close together in the same sentence. He knows that now.

I find it hard to believe that there are not provisions within the state party to allow for the forcible replacement of candidates, regardless of whether they won a primary.

“Dims will likely overplay their hands about Akin’s remark and they will suffer a boomerang effect “

Yes, there’s been some of that already. R candidates just have to repudiate his first remarks to appear ‘moderate on women’s issues’. Which they’ve done- as he has himself.
That’s got to mess up the Dems’ ‘war on women’ strategy.

No more apologizing though, he has to go on the attack quickly.

( and wow! what a pity party is going on here...)

What an ego. He thinks he is the only pro-life Republican. He thinks no one can replace him to carry the torch to save the most innocent. What good is his pro-life position if he has just thrown the race to McCasKILL? It is all about him. What an arrogant *ss.

He threw the race. He is the 1919 Black Sox of politics.
